Job Description

11th Grade SAT & Postsecondary Preparation Teacher

At KIPP New Jersey, our mission is to prepare our students to change the world. We believe that a bachelor's degree is a powerful pathway to professional and personal success for many students - and we also recognize that strong career-aligned pathways can provide meaningful, upwardly mobile outcomes for students who choose a non-college route.

The 11th Grade SAT Prep Teacher plays a critical role in preparing students for postsecondary success by building the academic readiness, test performance, and postsecondary awareness required to make strong choices in 12th grade and beyond. This role focuses on two core areas: SAT preparation (via Winward Academy) and academic skill-building, and guided exploration and planning through the postsecondary wishlist-building process.

The CCR Teacher ensures students are academically prepared to meet key SAT benchmarks for high school graduation readiness (890), college readiness (1010), and competitive postsecondary programs (1250+), while also supporting students to develop a clear, informed postsecondary plan aligned to their strengths, interests, and goals.

This role requires strong content knowledge, skilled data-driven instruction, and the ability to motivate and support diverse learners toward ambitious outcomes.

Here's what you'll be doing:

SAT Preparation & Academic Instruction

  • Deliver rigorous, SAT-aligned instruction in EBRW and Math, using data to identify gaps, adjust pacing, and accelerate growth.
  • Prepare students to meet differentiated SAT benchmarks (890, 1010, 1250+) through tiered instruction, targeted practice, and intervention during ~45 minute SAT prep block 4-5 days per week.
  • Build students' test-taking strategies, confidence, and stamina through consistent practice and feedback.
  • Provide additional support to students who need it during after-school office hours.

Postsecondary Exploration & Wishlist Development

  • Guide students in researching, evaluating, and building postsecondary wishlists aligned to academic performance, interests, and long-term goals.
  • Teach how admissions criteria, selectivity, cost, and outcomes shape postsecondary options, in collaboration with counselors and KIPP Forward staff.

Data-Driven Practice & Collaboration

  • Monitor student progress toward SAT benchmarks and postsecondary readiness goals and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Collaborate with school teams and communicate progress and recommendations to students, families, and stakeholders.
Qualifications

Skills and Mindsets

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (specifically Excel), Google Workspace, assessment dashboards, and student trackers
  • Strong content knowledge in SAT Math and Evidence-Based Reading & Writing
  • Demonstrated ability to improve student outcomes on standardized assessments
  • Facility with data analysis to inform instruction and intervention
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organization and planning skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build trusting relationships with students and families
  • Adept at data analysis and strong content knowledge; ability to extract meaningful insights and actions from data
  • Growth mindset
  • Ability to motivate and support students toward ambitious academic goals
  • Ability to differentiate instruction for students with varied skill levels
  • Comfort working with ambiguity and adjusting plans based on student data
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and professional growth
  • Belief that all students can achieve postsecondary success with the right support and that you are responsible for providing that support
  • Ability to work occasional evenings & weekends (eg 2-3 Saturdays throughout the year  when there are SAT exams and chaperoning college tours with the 11th grade class)

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Candidates must demonstrate SAT content proficiency through one or more of the following:
    • SAT score of 1150+ (equivalent to 23+ on ACT)

Nice-to-Haves

  • 2+ years of experience teaching or tutoring secondary-level math and/or ELA, preferably with SAT or college readiness focus
  • Certified to teach high school in NJ
  • Demonstrated success preparing students for standardized assessments
  • Experience in a college access, college counseling, or college readiness program
  • Experience supporting first-generation or historically underserved students
  • Familiarity with postsecondary prep & advising platforms (e.g., Winward, College Board, Overgrad)
  • Prior experience in a KIPP or student-focused & outcomes-driven environment
