Casualty Executive Underwriter

About HDI Global Insurance Company

HDI Global Insurance Company is a commercial property and casualty insurer headquartered in Chicago, IL. As a wholly owned subsidiary of HDI Global SE, we manage the industrial lines division of the Talanx Group. With an international network spanning over 150 countries, we deliver sophisticated domestic and global insurance solutions to U.S.-based multinational and middle-market companies across a wide range of industries.

With Xcelerate29, HDI is shaping its future by becoming a Trusted Global Player, achieving Next-level Excellence, and building a Forward-thinking Organisation. This direction helps HDI Global lead the profitable growth game as a globally connected business, raise the bar every day through stronger underwriting, claims, and investment performance, and win tomorrow by starting today with a lean, fast, resilient, and future-ready organisation. Together, these priorities support profitable growth, sustainable profitability, global consistency, digital transformation, AI acceleration, smart cost leadership, and stronger collaboration across teams and markets. They also reflect our focus on being a workplace of choice by building a future-ready workforce where people learn, grow, adapt to technology change, and contribute to long-term success.

HDI is seeking an Executive Primary Casualty Underwriter to lead the profitable growth, strategic direction, and portfolio oversight of our U.S. excess and surplus (E amp;S) commercial primary casualty business. This senior-level role will focus on underwriting complex, high-severity primary casualty risks across general liability, products liability, and liquor liability lines, while serving as a referral authority and market leader within the organization.

The position may be remote or based in our Chicago office.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead underwriting strategy and execution for a significant E amp;S primary casualty portfolio, including General Liability, Products Liability, and Liquor Liability.
  • Underwrite highly complex, large-account, and litigation-sensitive risks across manufacturing, distribution, hospitality, commercial real estate, entertainment, and residential real estate sectors.
  • Evaluate and structure casualty programs with advanced pricing methodologies, attachment strategies, manuscript endorsements, and tailored coverage solutions.
  • Analyze loss experience, exposure data, contractual risk transfer, indemnification provisions, and emerging casualty trends to ensure disciplined underwriting and pricing adequacy.
  • Serve as senior referral authority for complex risks and provide technical guidance and mentorship to underwriting team members.
  • Drive portfolio profitability through active monitoring of loss trends, social inflation impacts, aggregation exposures, and capital deployment strategies.
  • Lead broker negotiations on large and strategic accounts to secure profitable growth while strengthening long-term market relationships.
  • Partner closely with claims, actuarial, legal, and risk engineering teams to deliver integrated casualty solutions and proactively manage large loss exposures.
  • Contribute to underwriting governance, peer reviews, audits, and committee participation; influence underwriting guidelines and appetite development.
  • Represent HDI as a senior market-facing casualty expert in broker meetings, industry events, and strategic client engagements.
  • Identify market opportunities, emerging industry trends, and areas for strategic expansion within the E amp;S primary casualty space.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; professional designations (CPCU, ARM, ARe, or equivalent) strongly preferred.
  • 8–12+ years of experience in commercial E amp;S primary casualty underwriting (carrier or MGA), including significant exposure to complex and large accounts.
  • Demonstrated expertise underwriting high-severity, long-tail, and litigation-sensitive risks.
  • Advanced understanding of loss cost drivers, social inflation trends, contractual risk transfer, and evolving legal and regulatory dynamics.
  • Proven ability to independently evaluate complex risks, exercise sound underwriting judgment, and make balanced risk-reward decisions aligned with portfolio strategy.
  • Experience serving as referral authority or mentoring junior underwriters preferred.
  • Strong analytical capability reviewing loss runs, exposure data, actuarial indications, and pricing models.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and executive-level relationship management skills.</
