What is a contractual Python web scraping job?

Contractual Python Web Scraping jobs involve hiring professionals on a temporary or project basis to extract data from websites using the Python programming language. These jobs typically require knowledge of Python libraries such as BeautifulSoup, Scrapy, or Selenium to automate the process of collecting and processing web data. Contractual roles are ideal for companies or individuals who need specific data sets or one-time scraping projects completed efficiently, without committing to a long-term hire.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contractual Python web scraping specialist?

To thrive as a Contractual Python Web Scraping specialist, you need strong proficiency in Python programming, web scraping libraries like BeautifulSoup and Scrapy, and a solid understanding of HTML, CSS, and HTTP protocols. Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git), API usage, and cloud platforms is often required, along with experience in handling data storage formats like JSON or CSV. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are vital soft skills for interpreting client requirements and overcoming scraping challenges. These skills ensure accurate data extraction, reliable project delivery, and successful collaboration with clients or teams.

What are some common challenges faced in a contractual Python web scraping role, and how can job seekers prepare for them?

In a contractual Python web scraping role, professionals often encounter challenges such as dealing with websites that implement anti-scraping measures, handling frequent changes in website structures, and managing large volumes of data efficiently. To prepare, job seekers should familiarize themselves with tools like Selenium, BeautifulSoup, and Scrapy, as well as techniques for rotating proxies and handling CAPTCHAs. Staying up to date with legal and ethical considerations regarding web scraping is also crucial. Proactive communication with clients to clarify project requirements and timelines can further help ensure successful project delivery.

Job description

Material Bank is the world's largest material marketplace for the architecture and design industry. Operating in 37 countries, our platform has become the standard for design professionals around the globe. Every day, Material Bank connects thousands of designers with tens of thousands of materials from leading brands. Material Bank is the fastest and most powerful way for design professionals to search, sample, and specify materials.

As a Technical Operations Engineer, you will drive the development of the systems, tools, automations, and integrations that power Material Bank's internal operations. Sitting at the intersection of technology and business operations, you will work across departments to identify opportunities, solve complex operational challenges, and build scalable solutions that improve efficiency, reliability, and decision-making across the organization.

This is a highly hands-on role for someone who enjoys both building and operating systems. You will own projects from concept through deployment, developing internal applications, automations, integrations, and data workflows that support teams across the business. You will also serve as a key technical resource during operational incidents, helping diagnose issues, coordinate resolution efforts, and continuously improve the systems that keep Material Bank running smoothly.

We are looking for someone who combines strong technical aptitude with exceptional problem-solving skills and a high degree of ownership. The ideal candidate is energized by ambiguity, comfortable working directly with non-technical stakeholders, and motivated by finding practical solutions that create measurable impact. As AI increasingly transforms how our business operates, you will also play a critical role in identifying and implementing AI-powered workflows and automation opportunities throughout the organization.

What you'll do
  • Build and deploy internal web applications end-to-end, including modern web frontends, Python backends, and the underlying data models that help replace spreadsheets and manual processes. Own the deployment, monitoring, and ongoing operation of the solutions you build.
  • Develop and operate data pipelines (ETL) that ingest data from multiple sources, including ERPs, CRMs, data warehouses, and scraped web sources. Normalize, clean, validate, and deliver data in a form that teams and applications can use effectively. Monitor pipeline health and respond when issues occur.
  • Integrate internal and external platforms through REST APIs and webhooks, including CRM, ERP, ticketing, messaging, identity, data warehouse, and logistics providers, enabling reliable data flow across the business.
  • Embed AI into operational workflows, including retrieval over internal knowledge, document and data extraction, classification, drafting, and routing. Apply the appropriate tools and approaches to accelerate research, reviews, and decision-making.
  • Own system monitoring and incident response by triaging alerts, assessing severity, investigating logs and metrics, identifying root causes, coordinating resolution efforts, and communicating status updates to stakeholders.
  • Serve as a technical resource across departments, translating requests from non-technical teams into practical solutions, whether through reporting, process improvements, automation, or custom-built tools.
What you'll bring
  • 3+ years of experience building software, automations, data pipelines, or technical solutions in roles such as software engineering, technical operations, data engineering, systems engineering, automation engineering, or analytics engineering.
  • Strong proficiency in Python for scripting, automation, backend services, and data processing.
  • Ability to build across the stack, including modern web applications, APIs, databases, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Experience working with APIs, authentication systems, webhooks, and third-party platform integrations.
  • Strong SQL and data modeling skills, with the ability to work comfortably across operational and analytical datasets.
  • Hands-on experience using AI coding assistants and modern AI platforms to accelerate development and automate workflows.
  • Comfort operating production systems, troubleshooting issues, investigating incidents, and maintaining reliable services.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to independently take ambiguous requests from idea to implementation.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • High ownership, curiosity, adaptability, and a bias toward building practical solutions that create measurable business impact.
  • Experience with web scraping tools such as Playwright or Selenium.
  • Experience building data warehouse pipelines using platforms such as Snowflake or BigQuery.
  • Experience with serverless or scheduled job infrastructure, including Lambda, Fargate, cron, or containerized workloads.
  • Experience with CI/CD workflows and Docker.
  • Prior experience building internal tooling within a marketplace or e-commerce environment.
What you’ll get from us:
  • Our people: We are a growth-driven team that values efficiency, builds smart automation, operates in small empowered teams, and moves quickly from idea to execution.
  • Relaxation and Celebrations: Flexible PTO, Sick Days, Paid National Holidays, and even more (ask us about this when we connect).
  • Health Benefits: We contribute to your medical, dental, vision and short-term/long-term disability plans and have a strong employee assistance program.
  • Plan for your Retirement: 401(k) eligible after your first 90's employed!
  • Giving Back: We sponsor multiple events throughout the year to help out our communities.
  • Growth: We'll help you take your career to the next level. We want you to be creative and take initiative which will allow you to grow and create within the company. Most importantly, be the best at what matters!
  • Flexible Work Schedules: With business units and employees across the globe, Material Technologies has embraced a hybrid working model allowing department leaders to decide on the best approach for their respective teams, whether that be remote, in person, or a little of both.

Material Bank is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We value diversity, and all applicants will be considered for employment without attention to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, national origin, veteran or disability status or other status protected under any applicable federal, state or local law.
