PRN PREOP/PACU REGISTERED NURSE

Position Purpose
The Registered Nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and coordinating patient care from admission to discharge. The Registered Nurse is responsible for the achievement of patient outcomes in accordance with the mission of the facility. Prepare patients for surgical procedures, monitors and cares for patients post-operatively and prepares patients for discharge. Responsible for conducting business and patient care activities consistent with the hospital's policy for Patient's Rights and Responsibilities without discriminating against the individual because of sex, age, race, or religion or any other potentially discriminating factor. Responsible for the discrete and confidential handling of all patient information whether written or spoken, and to be ever vigilant and sensitive to where and how any patient information is shared.
Interpersonal Relationships
As a representative of our surgery center, all comments, attitudes, actions, and behaviors have a direct affect on the facility's image and perceptions of quality service. Interaction with patients, family members, physicians, referral sources, affiliating schools, visitors, etc. must be in a manner that is friendly, supportive, courteous, respectful, cooperative, and professional. This behavior should promote an atmosphere of teamwork congruent with facility standards and guidelines to promote positive relations, and set an example for the staff.
Position Requirements
Licenses or Certifications: Current licensure to practice in the State of Ohio. Successful completion of Basic Cardiac Life Support Course; ACLS preferred and PALS preferred.
Education, Vocational Training and Experience
Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing. Current ACLS preferred and PALS certificate preferred.
Experience
Minimum of 2 years experience in PACU, ICU OR ER nursing preferred.

Essential Position Responsibilities
A. Job Knowledge
1. Assesses plans, evaluates and ensures the implementation of the patient's care to achieve identified outcomes.
  • Assesses patient status on admission and on an ongoing basis.

  • Ensures provision of patient care daily in an organized and timely manner.

2. Assumes a leadership role in the provision of quality nursing care for patients receiving care..
  • Analyzes nursing care provided in the facility related to the established standards of care.
  • Participates in the monitoring and evaluation of nursing care provided.
  • Demonstrates ability to coordinate the nursing care provided in the facility.
    1. Assigns patient care responsibilities based on patient needs and abilities of available staff.
    2. Assumes charge nurse responsibility as assigned.
    3. Demonstrates ability to make decisions concerning facility based problems.
  • Participates on quality council to facilitate improvement of nursing care and achievement of the mission of the facility, as requested.

  • Participates in developing standardized patient education programs, as requested.
3. Demonstrates continued competence in treating, and caring for individuals based upon age-specific needs utilizing a developmental perspective.
  • Displays an understanding of each patient's cognitive, physical, emotional, and chronological maturity in the assessments, treatment, and care undertaken.
  • Appropriately modifies approach to the patient based upon patient age utilizing a developmental perspective.
  • Provides appropriate interventions related to safety issues.
4. Demonstrates appropriate knowledge and competence of designated skills identified for position.
5. Clinical Activities
  1. Participates in patient care activities and adheres to requirements of RN job description when providing patient care as evidenced by:
    1. Admission assessment upon patients arrival
    2. Documents response to nursing action
    3. Treats patients and family with courtesy, respect and professionalism
    4. Provides pre amp; post operative instructions, verbal and written to the patients understanding
    5. Stocks unit and carries out unit routine, check crash cart and counts narcotics
    6. Follow up phone calls and cards are sent to patients. Documents per unit policy . Follows surgery schedule and anticipates patient arrival
    7. Responsible for patient's admission and preop care, holistic preparation for surgery considering all needs utilizing preference cards.
    8. Documents all unusual occurrences and post-operative complications for QI follow up.
    9. Frequent ongoing assessment of patients condition.
    10. Prompt administration of pain and anesthesia nausea medications when indicated.
6. Quality and Customer Service
  1. Works enthusiastically as a member of a team evidenced by:
    1. Maintains active professional relationships with doctors and patients by assessing needs and levels of satisfaction with hospital services.
    2. Make every effort to appease dissatisfied medical staff and/or patients.
    3. Explains hospital policy and routine to patients so misunderstandings do not occur.
7. Employee Management
  1. Demonstrates the ability to work well with other employees and assist in new employee training as evidenced by:
    1. Assists in welcoming new employees and helping with orientation when appropriate.
    2. Directs ancillary staff members to achieve the daily need of the department.
    3. Encourages fellow employees to be productive when patient care activities are slow.
    4. Maintains confidentiality for which they are privileged.
8. Resource and Inventory Management
  1. Ensures proper use of resources (time and supplies) as evidenced by:
    1. Careful use of supplies and medicines to avoid waste.
    2. Reports to charge nurse when supplies are low and need ordering.
    3. Keeps accurate time records
    4. Stocks units with supplies/drugs as needed
    5. Helps keep supplies neat and organized
9. Regulatory Compliance
  1. Complies with state rules/regulations and the Joint Commission standards as evidenced by:
    1. 100% of regulatory concerns or unusual occurrences are reported to supervisor nurse within 24 hours of occurrence.
    2. When patient injury or disaster occurs, administration is notified immediately.
    3. RN license and ACLS certification kept current and kept on file at the hospital
10. Safety
  1. Maintain unit in safe condition as evidenced by cleared hallways, secured electrical wiring and reporting of broken equipment promptly. Adheres to all facility safety regulations and guidelines regarding patient safety as evidenced by:
    1. Attends monthly staff meeting as documented in attendance records.
    2. Identifies, corrects and reports unsafe conditions immediately
B. Productivity
1. Follows established policies and procedures with regard to attendance.
  • Maintains attendance according to guidelines and policy established by facility.
  • Adheres to tardiness policy.
  • Provides notification for unscheduled absences or tardiness in accordance with established departmental procedures as noted by supervisor.
