Marathon Petroleum Corporation is currently seeking a Law Contracts Advisor/Senior Law Contracts Advisor within Marathon's Law Business Operations - Midstream group. The Law Contracts Advisor serves as a trusted business partner, providing commercial and contractual expertise across a wide range of agreements. This role is responsible for negotiating contracts, managing risk, improving contract processes, and supporting business stakeholders to drive successful outcomes for Marathon Petroleum and MPLX LP.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Accountable for advancing MPLX's interests through negotiation of high-quality agreements that ensure economic protection and rationality, relational success, image and reputation, stability and maximize transaction efficiency.

  • Provides commercial and contractual support on matters regarding contract commitments, including contract strategy, risk management, preparation, and negotiation of contracts, claims avoidance, contract compliance and administration.

  • Interprets, drafts, and negotiates contract building blocks ("redlines").

  • Drives continuous improvement in contracting space to minimize the overall cycle time from request to contract execution. Including but not limited to, process re-engineering, developing alternative language (playbook) for use, assisting with template development, and developing checklists.

  • Captures applicable business interests, issues, and positions as they relate to model contract selection, required risk allocation and negotiations.

  • Analyzes contracts, including non-standardized, third-party contracts, for form and content; evaluates contractual content of proposals; provides interpretation of contract language; drafts internal contracts or responses to external contracts; evaluates need for additional legal review.

  • Participates in negotiation meetings to establish mutually acceptable contract terms with counterparties; carries out detailed research, makes appropriate contacts with outside companies and provides a comprehensive plan of action to accomplish contractual objectives; develops cooperative partnerships with counterparts at key counterparties.

  • Coordinates and engages in cross-organizational communications with other operating departments to draft appropriate responses to external contracts.

  • Drives changes to the contract process that improves organization and process control; develops contract strategies and philosophies for the full variety of company contractual requirements; engages and works with Business Development, Asset Development, Accounting, Land, and other applicable organizations to design and implement improvements to the contract process.

  • Reduces contract risk through review of the general terms and conditions; tracks trends with respect to areas of contractual disagreement with counterparties and analyzes and suggests potential solutions to same.

  • Performs initial reviews; coordinates contracting activities with Asset Development, Accounting, Land and Law

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree and two (2) or more years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Education, experience and training desired in law, compliance, contract management, or business management.

SKILLS:

  • Ability to identify complex problems and effectively partner with stakeholders to develop, evaluate, and implement solutions

  • Ability to juggle multiple matters and effectively prioritize work to ensure completion in a timely and efficient manner

  • Strong people skills and a collaborative, team-oriented attitude.

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience

  • Desire to learn and open to feedback.
