What is a contractual 6 pack captain?

A Contractual 6 Pack Captain is a licensed individual authorized to operate a commercial vessel carrying up to six paying passengers. This position typically refers to captains holding a U.S. Coast Guard OUPV (Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels) license, commonly called a '6-pack' license due to the passenger limit. These captains are often employed on a contractual basis for charter boat operations, fishing trips, sightseeing tours, or water taxi services. Their responsibilities include ensuring passenger safety, navigating waterways, maintaining the vessel, and complying with maritime regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contractual 6 pack captain, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contractual 6 Pack Captain, you need a strong knowledge of maritime navigation, seamanship, and relevant U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) regulations, typically supported by a valid USCG OUPV (Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels) license. Familiarity with GPS, VHF radios, chartplotters, and safety equipment is essential for operational effectiveness. Leadership, clear communication, and strong customer service skills help ensure passenger safety and satisfaction. These competencies are crucial for maintaining regulatory compliance, safe vessel operation, and a positive onboard experience.

What are some common challenges faced by a contractual 6 pack captain, and how can they be managed effectively?

As a Contractual 6 Pack Captain, one common challenge is managing differing personalities and skill levels among passengers or crew on short-term charters. Ensuring safety, clear communication, and customer satisfaction within tight timeframes can also be demanding. Staying organized, conducting thorough safety briefings, and setting clear expectations with clients are key strategies for effective management. Building rapport quickly and adapting to changing weather or itinerary needs will help ensure smooth operations and positive feedback.

Job description

Full-Time & Part-Time USCG Licensed Captain / Marine Operations Team Member

Boats and Fun – North Captiva Island, Florida

Love being on the water? Want more than just another captain job?

Boats and Fun is looking for an energetic, customer-focused USCG Licensed Captain to join our growing team. We currently have both Full-Time and Part-Time positions available, with year-round opportunities for the right candidate.

We are a family-owned business that has been serving Southwest Florida for nearly 20 years and has built one of the area’s strongest reputations for customer service. Every day is different—you might captain a private dolphin tour in the morning, help guests prepare for a boat rental, assist customers in our island store, or transport families to paradise aboard one of our water taxis.

If you’re looking for a position where you can stay busy, enjoy working with people, and be part of an amazing team, we’d love to hear from you.

Applicants without a valid USCG Captain’s License will not be considered.

About Boats and Fun

Boats and Fun is a family-owned and operated marine recreation company based on beautiful North Captiva Island.

Our services include:

  • Water Taxi Service
  • Private Boat Tours
  • Boat Rentals
  • Golf Cart Rentals
  • Bikes, Kayaks & Paddleboard Rentals
  • Island Gift Shop
  • Beach Equipment Rentals

We take pride in providing exceptional customer experiences and are looking for team members who do the same.

What You’ll Do

This is a true team member position—not just a captain’s job.

Every day is different, and everyone helps wherever needed to provide an incredible guest experience.

Captain Duties

  • Operate Water Taxi service throughout Pine Island Sound
  • Captain private sightseeing and dolphin tours
  • Safely transport passengers, luggage, groceries, and supplies
  • Assist guests boarding and departing vessels
  • Operate safely in changing weather and water conditions
  • Deliver exceptional customer service every trip

Our fleet includes Glacier Bay catamarans, deck boats, and other passenger vessels.

Boat Rental Operations

Help customers enjoy a safe and unforgettable day on the water by:

  • Teaching our boating orientation course
  • Training renters on boat operation and local waterways
  • Performing boat check-outs and inspections
  • Assisting with reservations
  • Answering customer questions
  • Helping with boat returns

Don’t worry—we’ll train you on our systems and boating course.

Store & Island Operations

Everyone on our team pitches in.

You will also:

  • Assist customers in our island store
  • Rent golf carts, kayaks, bikes, paddleboards and beach equipment
  • Stock merchandise
  • Help keep the marina, boats, docks and store clean and organized
  • Load supplies and equipment
  • Support coworkers during busy days

We’re looking for someone who enjoys staying active and taking initiative—not someone who only wants to drive a boat.

Who We’re Looking For

Our ideal teammate is someone who is:

  • Friendly and outgoing
  • Dependable and punctual
  • Professional with customers
  • A safe and confident boat operator
  • Self-motivated
  • A team player
  • Willing to jump in wherever help is needed
  • Comfortable working outdoors in a fast-paced environment

If you enjoy making people’s vacations memorable, you’ll fit right in.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum 18 years old
  • Valid USCG Merchant Mariner Credential (OUPV / 6-Pack minimum)
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug screen, background check and driving record check
  • Must participate in our USCG random drug testing program
  • Ability to lift 30–40 lbs regularly
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays and flexible schedules

Local knowledge of Pine Island Sound, North Captiva, Captiva, Boca Grande and surrounding waters is a plus but not required.

  • Paid Time Off
  • Life Insurance
  • Employee Discounts
  • Year-End Profit Sharing Bonus
