What is contracting accounting?

Contracting accounting refers to the specialized area of accounting that focuses on managing the financial records, billing, and compliance requirements for businesses that work on a contract basis, such as construction companies, government contractors, and service providers. This field involves tracking project costs, managing budgets, ensuring adherence to contract terms, and preparing detailed financial reports for each contract. Contracting accountants must also understand relevant laws and regulations, such as the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) for government contracts, to ensure accurate and compliant financial practices.

What are some common challenges Contracting Accountants face when managing multiple contracts simultaneously?

Contracting Accountants often juggle a variety of contracts, each with unique terms, compliance requirements, and billing schedules. Staying organized and maintaining accurate records is crucial, as errors can lead to financial discrepancies or missed deadlines. Additionally, they frequently collaborate with project managers, legal teams, and vendors to clarify contract details and resolve issues, requiring strong communication and problem-solving skills. Adopting effective workflow tools and regularly reviewing contract statuses can help manage these complexities efficiently.

  • Cost Accounting Optimization: Define and maintain cost elements, overhead allocation rules, and cost components to ensure accurate "Cost of Goods Sold" (COGS) reporting and inventory valuation.
  • Compliance & Audit Support: Configure systems to meet DCAA and GAAP requirements, ensuring that cost-plus and fixed-price contract accounting is handled with 100% auditability.
  • Release Management: Evaluate quarterly Oracle Fusion updates specifically for impact on costing flows, performing regression testing on automated accounting entries before they hit production.
  • Process Engineering: Partner with Supply Chain and Manufacturing to ensure that physical receiving workflows trigger the correct technical accounting events in the ERP.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Manufacturing Financials: Deep understanding of Transactional Accounting, including Receipt Accruals, Landed Cost Management (LCM), and Work-in-Process (WIP) costing. • Technical Proficiency: Ability to write SQL queries to extract data for reconciliation and experience using OTBI (Oracle Transactional Business Intelligence) for financial reporting.
  • A&D Industry Knowledge: Familiarity with government contracting accounting (CAS, FAR, DCAA) and how these requirements translate into ERP system settings.
