What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contracting Accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contracting Accountant, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and contract management, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance. Proficiency with accounting software (such as QuickBooks or SAP), spreadsheet tools, and knowledge of relevant regulations or certifications like CPA are highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate financial oversight, compliance with contractual obligations, and clear stakeholder collaboration.

What is the difference between Contracting Accounting vs Bookkeeping?

AspectContracting AccountingBookkeeping
CredentialsAccounting certifications (e.g., CPA, CMA)Basic accounting or bookkeeping training
Work EnvironmentFreelance or contract basis, often with multiple clientsIn-house or small business, routine data entry
Employer & Industry UsageAccounting firms, consulting, freelanceSmall businesses, retail, service industries

Contracting Accounting involves providing specialized financial services on a temporary or freelance basis, often requiring advanced certifications. Bookkeeping focuses on recording daily financial transactions and is typically a more routine role within small businesses. While both roles handle financial data, contracting accountants offer broader financial analysis and compliance services, whereas bookkeepers maintain accurate records for operational purposes.

What is contracting accounting?

Contracting accounting refers to the specialized area of accounting that focuses on managing the financial records, billing, and compliance requirements for businesses that work on a contract basis, such as construction companies, government contractors, and service providers. This field involves tracking project costs, managing budgets, ensuring adherence to contract terms, and preparing detailed financial reports for each contract. Contracting accountants must also understand relevant laws and regulations, such as the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) for government contracts, to ensure accurate and compliant financial practices.

What are some common challenges Contracting Accountants face when managing multiple contracts simultaneously?

Contracting Accountants often juggle a variety of contracts, each with unique terms, compliance requirements, and billing schedules. Staying organized and maintaining accurate records is crucial, as errors can lead to financial discrepancies or missed deadlines. Additionally, they frequently collaborate with project managers, legal teams, and vendors to clarify contract details and resolve issues, requiring strong communication and problem-solving skills. Adopting effective workflow tools and regularly reviewing contract statuses can help manage these complexities efficiently.

About the Role
At Remarcable, we're reshaping how electrical contractors and distributors connect, purchase, and operate. Our cloud-based platform streamlines procurement, accounting workflows, and tool management, giving contractors clarity, efficiency, and automation.
We are hiring an Accounting Enablement Analyst to serve as the accounting subjectโ€‘matter expert supporting our internal teams and customers. This role is focused on training, education, enablement, and accounting best practices related to Remarcable's integrations.
Experience in the construction ecosystem-especially electrical contracting-is a major advantage. Construction accounting is unique, and your industry familiarity will give you immediate credibility with customers and internal teams.
If you enjoy teaching accounting concepts, translating ERP functionality into practical workflows, and being the trusted accounting SME inside a fast-growing SaaS company, this role is an excellent fit.
What You'll Do
Training & Enablement
  • Deliver live and virtual training sessions for customers and internal teams on accounting workflows, constructionโ€‘specific practices, ERP integrations, and financial data flow.
  • Develop training materials, documentation, process guides, and bestโ€‘practice resources tailored to construction accounting.
  • Conduct workshops focused on AP, AR, GL, Job Costing, WIP, retainage, and revenue workflows, aligned to contractor needs.
  • Build and maintain enablement curriculum for onboarding, expansions, and ongoing education.

Accounting & ERP Subject-Matter Expertise
  • Act as the organization's accounting SME with strong understanding of construction workflows and terminology.
  • Translate accounting requirements-including job costing, cost codes, committed cost tracking, and subcontractor billing-into appropriate Remarcable configurations.
  • Partner with Product and Engineering to validate accounting workflows and ensure alignment with construction accounting principles.

Integration Guidance & Workflow Mapping
  • Help customers understand how their accounting data maps into Remarcable and through connected systems (Sage, Trimble, Foundations, etc.).
  • Explain integration behavior, exception scenarios, and data transformation rules relevant to construction accounting.
  • Support onboarding teams with GL mapping, cost code structures, vendor workflows, PO/receipt/invoice flows, and job costing alignment.
  • Provide accounting logic or workflow context when support cases involve financial processes.

Documentation & Collaboration
  • Create documentation for accounting workflows, integration logic, construction best practices, and training curriculum.
  • Collaborate with Support, CS, Supplier Relations, Engineering, and Product teams.
  • Contribute to internal knowledgeโ€‘sharing to elevate accounting and construction workflow literacy across the organization.

Who You Are
Core Strengths
  • Strong communicator capable of teaching accounting concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Able to translate accounting language into clear system workflows.
  • Comfortable presenting, training, and leading discussions with both internal teams and customers.
  • Naturally curious and proactive in understanding complex financial and construction processes.
  • Organized, articulate, and confident in building documentation and training programs.

Accounting Background
  • Strong understanding of GL, AP, AR, Job Costing, WIP, Accruals, Revenue workflows, and retainage.
  • Experience in construction or electrical contracting accounting is strongly preferred.
  • Handsโ€‘on experience with ERPs used in the construction industry such as Sage 300 CRE, Vista, Trimble, Foundations, Spectrum, Acumatica Construction Edition, QuickBooks, or Jonas.
  • Accounting degree, minor, designation, or equivalent experience required.

Industry Experience
  • Background in construction, electrical contracting, distribution, or material supply is a major asset.
  • Understanding of job sites, field operations, supplier workflows, and how contractors purchase and bill materials.
  • Familiarity with cost codes, committed cost tracking, and job cost reporting.

Systems & SaaS Aptitude
  • Comfortable learning new systems and understanding platform data flow.
  • Ability to translate system behavior into business language.
  • Experience in SaaS environments is an asset.
