Contract Unity Game Developer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Unity Game Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Unity Game Developer, you need strong proficiency in C#, Unity engine workflows, and experience developing and deploying games across platforms, usually backed by a relevant degree or portfolio. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), asset management tools, and integrating APIs or SDKs is commonly required. Effective communication, self-motivation, and adaptability are essential soft skills for collaborating remotely and delivering on diverse client requirements. Mastering these skills ensures high-quality, timely game development and fosters productive client relationships in a competitive contract environment.

What are Contract Unity Game Developers?

Contract Unity Game Developers are professionals hired on a temporary or project basis to design, develop, and implement games or interactive experiences using the Unity engine. They work with studios or clients to create gameplay mechanics, visual elements, and software architecture, often collaborating with artists and designers. Unlike full-time employees, contract developers typically work on specific projects or for a set duration, providing flexibility for both the developer and the employer.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Sr. Android Engineer based in Netherlands.

This role is an opportunity to shape the future of large-scale Android launcher experiences used by tens of millions of users globally. You will lead the development of innovative home-screen environments that blend native Android systems with embedded Unity gaming experiences and advanced monetization layers. The work spans deep platform engineering, performance optimization, and product-driven feature development in a fast-moving, AI-native environment. You will be responsible for designing reusable launcher architectures that can power multiple product variants with minimal rework. This is a high-impact position where engineering decisions directly influence user engagement, revenue systems, and product scalability. You will collaborate closely with product, design, and game teams while mentoring other engineers and contributing to a culture of technical excellence.

Accountabilities:
  • Lead the end-to-end development of native Android launcher experiences, including home screen, app grid, app drawer, folders, widgets, wallpapers, and themes, ensuring a seamless user experience across devices.
  • Architect and implement a modular launcher platform capable of supporting multiple product variants while maintaining high performance, stability, and code reusability.
  • Integrate Unity-based game experiences using Unity as a Library, ensuring smooth embedding, process isolation, and optimized performance within the launcher environment.
  • Optimize system-level performance including startup speed, memory usage, and responsiveness, while ensuring compliance with Google Play policies and Android system constraints.
  • Implement monetization systems including ads, search integrations, and in-game ad placements using platforms such as AdMob and Unity Ads.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate product requirements into scalable technical solutions and drive features from concept to production release.
  • Mentor engineers, participate in code reviews, and contribute to improving engineering practices, testing standards, and AI-assisted development workflows.
Requirements:
  • 6+ years of professional Android development experience building large-scale, production-grade applications.
  • Strong expertise in Kotlin, Coroutines, Dagger, MVVM, Clean Architecture, and modern Android frameworks, including early experience with Jetpack Compose.
  • Hands-on experience with advanced Android system components such as background and foreground services, WorkManager, Android Overlay, and ANR/performance profiling.
  • Proven experience building or contributing to custom Android launchers or home-screen replacement applications.
  • Experience integrating Unity as a Library or similar game engines into Android applications, ideally with performance optimization for embedded gameplay.
  • Strong understanding of mobile monetization systems, including ad SDK integrations and Google Play policy compliance for ads and launcher apps.
  • Deep familiarity with debugging, profiling, and optimizing Android applications using industry-standard tools.
  • Experience working in AI-assisted development environments using tools such as Copilot, Cursor, or similar agentic coding systems, with strong engineering judgment over generated outputs.
  • Strong product mindset, ownership mentality, and ability to deliver high-quality features independently in fast-paced environments.
  • Excellent communication skills, collaboration mindset, and openness to feedback within distributed teams.
Benefits:
  • 100 percent remote-first global working environment.
  • Competitive compensation package aligned with experience and impact.
  • Equity participation for full-time team members.
  • Performance-based bonuses under the company bonus program.
  • Open PTO policy, generous company holidays, and wellness days.
  • Weekly no-meeting focus days to support deep work and productivity.
  • Recognition and rewards programs supporting team achievements.
  • Collaborative, high-energy engineering culture with strong emphasis on innovation and ownership.
