Job description

Located approximately 26 miles from the City of Fairbanks, Fort Knox is a centre of excellence for the Company as one of the few cold weather heap leach facilities in the world. Fort Knox celebrated its 25-year anniversary in 2021, and has produced over 8.5 million ounces since it began operation. In 2020, Kinross acquired Manh Choh - the mine commenced production in 2024 and process ore at Fort Knox.
Fort Knox prioritizes being a strong contributor to the State and local communities, and since 2001, has helped support more than 300 community partners and has contributed more than US$25 million to the Alaska Mental Health Trust.
Job Summary
As an Exploration Geologist, you will be expected to work in a team setting coordinating staff and contractor activities in exploration program design, execution, and reporting. Contractor supervision and project management duties are balanced with geologic duties and team members contribute to all department programs. Mentoring junior staff and contracting staff during daily functions will develop your leadership skills.
Kinross Alaska Exploration will be active in programs encompassing mine site, brownfield, and greenfield settings across the communities and rural areas of the Kinross Alaska Mineral Estate. Field geology and logistics skills will be applied in a variety of scenarios from town based to tent based, with travel by highway, UTV, helicopter, and by foot.
This position is based at the Fort Knox Mine, located approximately 26 miles from the City of Fairbanks, and employees commute daily. Frequently, the position will require travel to other offices, facilities, or field sites, particularly from May through October.
Job Responsibilities
  • Participate in technical and logistical project activities in the field and office
  • Advise on/or carry out technical functions (mapping, drill hole logging, project planning, etc.) when appropriate
  • Integrate and interpret geologic mapping, geophysical, geochemical, trenching, and drilling data.
  • Assist in constructing 3D Geologic Models, and compiling and calculating mineral resources
  • Oversee and enforce rigorous QA/QC standards for all aspects of technical projects
  • Assist in authoring routine and statutory technical reports
  • Assist in assessing and maintaining Kinross' Mineral Estate in Alaska
  • Integrate and interpret geologic mapping, geophysical, geochemical and core drilling data.
  • Assist in preparing budget requests, scoping contracts, and managing contractors for exploration, resource definition, and project development.
  • Assist in budget tracking and estimation of on-going exploration projects.
  • Possesses good communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to lead project teams.
  • Help develop other department personnel to perform duties listed above.
  • Compliance with all company policies and procedures including, but not limited to safety, environmental, confidentiality and code of conduct.
  • Consistently exercises discretion and judgment in job performance.
  • Works without risk or harm to self and others.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued by state agency, or must be able to pass driver competency course and exam.

Education and Experience
    • Bachelor of Science degree in Geology or equivalent required. A Masters of Science degree with economic geology emphasis is preferred.
    • A minimum of 2 years of experience as a mine or exploration geologist
    • Knowledge of exploration techniques as they apply to mineral deposit discovery and evaluation.
    • Advanced knowledge of mineral deposits and the integration of exploration methods in the discovery and mineral deposit evaluation process. Identify and communicate indications of favorable geologic settings (geology, geochemistry, alteration, and geophysics).
    • Experience with ArcGIS or equivalent desktop mapping software and acQuire database software is preferred
    • Familiarity with Leapfrog Geo is preferred
    • Experience with excel and access database is desired
    • Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills
    • Demonstrates strong administrative, organizational and technical writing skills
