Contract Soil Engineer information

What is the difference between Contract Soil Engineer vs Geotechnical Engineer?

AspectContract Soil EngineerGeotechnical Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, possibly licensure, specialized in soil testingEngineering degree, often licensed, with specialization in geotechnical analysis
Work EnvironmentProject-based, on-site soil testing and analysisDesign, analysis, and consulting on soil stability and foundation issues
Employer & Industry UsageConstruction firms, geotechnical consulting companies, contractorsEngineering consulting firms, construction, infrastructure projects

Contract Soil Engineers focus on on-site soil testing and project-specific soil analysis, often working on a contractual basis. Geotechnical Engineers have a broader role in analyzing soil stability, designing foundations, and providing expert recommendations. While both roles require similar credentials, their work environments and responsibilities differ, with Contract Soil Engineers more involved in fieldwork and Geotechnical Engineers in analysis and design.

In both the public and private sectors our teams help identify, solve, mitigate, and manage critical environmental issues to help clients achieve a more sustainable future.
Weston is seeking a Geotechnical Project Engineer to manage and provide design services for engineering projects executed throughout the country, involving both clean construction and environmental remediation. In addition to site civil design, the Geotechnical Project Engineer will lead geotechnical planning, investigation, analysis, and design to support remediation systems, earthworks, foundations, and temporary works.
The Geotechnical Project Engineer is responsible for executing projects within their technical expertise; building teams of internal technical staff and sub-consultants; delivering work within scope, schedule, and budget; and maintaining safety, quality, and risk-management processes.
Location: Texas-based (Austin preferred). Additional Texas locations include Frisco, San Antonio, or Houston. Other preferred office locations include Lincolnshire, IL, and West Chester, PA. This is a hybrid position with weekly remote work opportunities.
Location:Remote
Expected Outcomes:
The Geotechnical Project Engineer will execute engineering design within their area ofcompetency while learning and collaborating with their engineering peers, developing into a well-rounded engineer capable of providing solutions to a wide variety of engineering and construction challenges. The Geotechnical Project Engineer will leverage an entrepreneurial mindset to approach projects with an open and evolving mindset that builds on lessons learned and takes advantage of new tools and technologies.
Geotechnical Design:
  • Plan and manage subsurface investigations (scopes, drilling oversight, H&S integration for impacted media), prepare boring logs, and synthesize field/lab data into GDR/GER deliverables with clear assumptions, design parameters, and risks.
  • Perform geotechnical analyses for foundations, embankments, retaining structures, slope stability, and seepage; translate results into drawing/specification packages and construction criteria.
  • Develop designs and specifications for temporary excavation support, dewatering/groundwater control, trench safety, and construction phasing to support remediation and civil works.
  • Support remedial design elements such as soil mixing/ISS, slurry cutoff walls, cap/cover systems, geosynthetics selection and CQA planning, settlement monitoring (inclinometers, piezometers, settlement plates), and risk controls for contaminated soils/groundwater.
  • Prepare and check earthwork, grading, and backfill specifications; define compaction/QA plans; review geotechnical RFIs and submittals; and support contractor means/methods reviews.
Geotechnical core competencies:
  • Subsurface exploration planning and oversight (SPT, CPT, rock coring) logging per USCS, and development of Geotechnical Data Reports (GDR) and Geotechnical Engineering Reports (GER).
  • Laboratory/field testing familiarity (moisture-density/Proctor, field density, Atterberg limits, grain size, consolidation, triaxial, direct shear, permeability/infiltration).
  • Foundation engineering (shallow/deep), settlement and bearing evaluation, ground improvement concepts.
  • Slope stability and seepage.
  • Earth retention (temporary/permanent SOE, tiebacks/soil nails), trench stability, and temporary work.
  • Remediation-focused geotech (ISS/soil mixing, slurry cutoff walls, cap/cover systems, geosynthetics/CQA, dewatering and groundwater control).
Design Leadership:
  • Take the technical lead in site civil designs; coordinate soil-structure interactions; construction phase testing, and construction permitting.
  • Lead teams of multi-disciplined engineers through project delivery.
  • Project delivery & quality:
    • Work with the engineering team to meet scope, schedule, budget, quality, and safety requirements; coordinate sub-consultants and drilling/testing vendors.
    • Complete requests for proposals (RFPs), develop scopes of work, obtain vendor quotes, and evaluate technical merit.
    • Provide field engineering services during construction (CQA/CQC observation, shop drawing reviews, submittals, change evaluations).
