What does a contract signal integrity engineer do?

A Contract Signal Integrity Engineer is a specialist who works on a temporary or project basis to analyze and optimize the electrical performance of high-speed electronic circuits. They focus on ensuring that signals in electronic systems, such as PCBs and communication links, maintain their quality and integrity without loss or distortion. Typical tasks include simulation, testing, and troubleshooting of signal pathways, as well as collaborating with hardware and PCB designers to prevent issues like crosstalk and electromagnetic interference. Their expertise is crucial for the reliable operation of advanced electronic devices, especially in industries like telecommunications, computing, and automotive electronics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract signal integrity engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Signal Integrity Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering principles, signal integrity analysis, and high-speed PCB design, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Expertise in simulation tools like HyperLynx, SIwave, or Ansys, along with experience in using oscilloscopes and network analyzers, is commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and presenting technical information. These skills ensure reliable, high-performance electronic designs and help prevent costly signal integrity issues in complex hardware systems.

What are some common challenges faced by contract signal integrity engineers when working with cross-functional teams?

Contract Signal Integrity Engineers often work closely with hardware designers, PCB layout engineers, and test engineers to ensure optimal signal performance. A common challenge is aligning differing priorities and technical languages across teams, which can lead to miscommunication or delays. Successfully navigating these challenges requires strong collaboration, clear documentation, and proactive communication to ensure signal integrity considerations are understood and integrated throughout the design process. Contract engineers must also quickly adapt to new workflows and company standards to stay productive in short-term environments.

What is the difference between Contract Signal Integrity Engineer vs Contract RF Engineer?

AspectContract Signal Integrity EngineerContract RF Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, certifications in signal integrity or high-speed designBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, RF or wireless certifications preferred

Job description

Description:
Patton designs and manufactures innovative communications, networking, industrial, and connectivity products used worldwide. We are seeking a Senior Electrical / Electronic Design Engineer to drive the development of complex hardware platforms from concept through production.
In this role, you will perform system- and board-level hardware architecture, design, development, verification, and product support for Patton's portfolio of networking, telecommunications, industrial control, and embedded systems products. You will work closely with software, mechanical, manufacturing, quality, and product management teams to deliver reliable, cost-effective, and manufacturable solutions.
The ideal candidate combines strong analog and digital circuit design expertise with practical experience bringing products from concept through production release. This position requires a highly motivated engineer capable of leading technical efforts, mentoring less experienced engineers, and independently solving complex engineering challenges.
Responsibilities
Product Architecture & Design
• Develop hardware architectures for embedded networking, communications, industrial, and connectivity products.
• Translate product requirements into detailed electrical and system specifications.
• Design complex digital, analog, mixed-signal, and power-management circuits.
• Select processors, SoCs, FPGAs, memories, power components, communication interfaces, and other key technologies.
• Perform schematic capture using advanced EDA tools.
• Develop designs that meet performance, reliability, manufacturability, cost, and regulatory requirements.
Hardware Development
• Design and bring up microprocessor- and SoC-based systems running Embedded Linux or RTOS-based software.
• Design high-speed digital interfaces including DDR memory, Ethernet, USB, PCIe, SERDES, SPI, I²C, UART, and related interfaces.
• Design communication-specific circuits including Ethernet, DSL, fiber, RF, and industrial networking interfaces as applicable.
• Design and debug switching power supplies, point-of-load regulators, battery-powered circuits, and power distribution systems.
• Conduct signal integrity, power integrity, thermal, and timing analysis.
Product Realization
• Lead hardware development activities from concept through production release.
• Collaborate with PCB designers to establish stack-ups, controlled impedance requirements, placement strategies, and routing constraints.
• Support prototype builds, engineering validation, pilot production, and manufacturing release.
• Investigate and resolve design, manufacturing, and field reliability issues.
• Drive cost optimization, component lifecycle management, and alternate component qualification.
Verification & Compliance
• Develop design verification and validation plans.
• Perform hardware characterization, system integration, and design verification testing.
• Analyze failures through structured root-cause investigation and corrective action.
• Design for compliance with UL, CE, FCC, EMC, environmental, and industry-specific standards.
