What does a contract signal integrity engineer do?

A Contract Signal Integrity Engineer is a specialist who works on a temporary or project basis to analyze and optimize the electrical performance of high-speed electronic circuits. They focus on ensuring that signals in electronic systems, such as PCBs and communication links, maintain their quality and integrity without loss or distortion. Typical tasks include simulation, testing, and troubleshooting of signal pathways, as well as collaborating with hardware and PCB designers to prevent issues like crosstalk and electromagnetic interference. Their expertise is crucial for the reliable operation of advanced electronic devices, especially in industries like telecommunications, computing, and automotive electronics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract signal integrity engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Signal Integrity Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering principles, signal integrity analysis, and high-speed PCB design, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Expertise in simulation tools like HyperLynx, SIwave, or Ansys, along with experience in using oscilloscopes and network analyzers, is commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and presenting technical information. These skills ensure reliable, high-performance electronic designs and help prevent costly signal integrity issues in complex hardware systems.

What are some common challenges faced by contract signal integrity engineers when working with cross-functional teams?

Contract Signal Integrity Engineers often work closely with hardware designers, PCB layout engineers, and test engineers to ensure optimal signal performance. A common challenge is aligning differing priorities and technical languages across teams, which can lead to miscommunication or delays. Successfully navigating these challenges requires strong collaboration, clear documentation, and proactive communication to ensure signal integrity considerations are understood and integrated throughout the design process. Contract engineers must also quickly adapt to new workflows and company standards to stay productive in short-term environments.

What is the difference between Contract Signal Integrity Engineer vs Contract RF Engineer?

AspectContract Signal Integrity EngineerContract RF Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, certifications in signal integrity or high-speed designBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, RF or wireless certifications preferred
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, simulation, and testing environments focused on high-speed digital signalsDesign and testing labs focused on RF circuits, antennas, and wireless systems
Industry UsageSemiconductors, electronics manufacturing, high-speed digital systemsWireless communications, telecommunications, aerospace

Contract Signal Integrity Engineers focus on ensuring high-speed digital signals maintain quality and performance, while Contract RF Engineers specialize in radio frequency systems and wireless communication. Both roles require electrical engineering backgrounds but differ in their technical focus and industry applications.

Job description

Amazon Leo is an initiative to launch a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites that will provide low-latency, high-speed broadband connectivity to unserved and underserved communities around the world.
The mission of Amazon Leo's Government (ALG) team is to leverage existing Amazon Leo technology and provide high speed, low latency, and secure satellite broadband services to the United States and our allied government customers.
As a Signal Integrity (SI) and Power Integrity (PI) Engineer, you will be responsible for developing SI/PI collateral supporting system integration of advanced technology, defining and developing Signal and Power Integrity test methodologies, participating in design reviews, performing SI and PI simulations, providing reports, collaborating with other engineers, validating your designs in the lab, and working to ensure a high technical bar for hardware designs across Amazon Leo.
The Signal Integrity Engineer will play a pivotal role in the team delivering innovative and fast-paced analysis and design solutions, focusing on satellite and ground system design and analysis as well as on the simulation verification of the various communication and control needs (compute, storage, data transfer, etc.) of the electronics sub-systems. They will be expected to lead a variety of tasks, from design simulation and analysis, high-speed circuit validation, to board bring-up and test. They will work across teams and support fellow engineers with design reviews and the preparation of joint reports and proposals

The candidate will have a sharp focus on the specific needs of the customer and be able to conduct trades and analyses to show that proposed solutions will meet the customer's goals.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience working on complex programs with a diverse set of talented individuals, as well as with partner organizations (including government agencies). The candidate will exhibit the potential to lead small sub-teams of electrical engineers, and be able to prepare easy-to-read and technically compelling written reports.
This position requires that the candidate selected be a US Citizen and candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a US Government security clearance of TS/SCI.

Key job responsibilities
- Interact directly with customers to understand technical requirements, and translate them into technically robust solutions backed by data and analysis.
- Experience in PCB level signal and power integrity analysis of complex high-density board stack-ups and transitions including via, blind-via, buried-via, and micro-via.
- Experience in signal integrity design and simulation of high-speed interfaces such as SerDes (PCIe, Interlaken, JESD), DDR, Ethernet, and MDI.
- Strong technical background and work experience simulating and analyzing electronic circuits including Analog Power, Digital Design, Mixed-Signal ADC/DAC, RF, Processors, FPGA, MCU, SoC, Memory, Transceivers, Clock generation and distribution.
- Strong background in electronics test equipment including digital multi-meters, oscilloscopes, signal generators, vector network analyzers, power meters, etc

- Hands-on experience using EM SIPI simulation tools such as ANSYS, ADS, Hyperlynx, etc.
- Facilitate cost trades on multiple parallel board configurations for cost/manufacturability vs performance.
- Deliver well-written documentation, reports, and presentations for technical design reviews, part of proposal efforts, and final test campaigns.
