AI Engineer (Mid–Senior)

United Global Technologies (UGT) | Remote (U.S.), | Full-time

UGT is hiring a mid-to-senior AI Engineer to design, build, and operate governed, production-grade AI capabilities across a multi-cloud environment (AWS Bedrock, Google Gemini for Government, and Microsoft Copilot) for a leading U.S. Department of Energy. You'll own data pipelines and AI control plane that make these capabilities secure, observable, and cost-governed — and mentor a junior engineer. This is a hands-on role at the center of the lab's emerging AI portfolio.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

-
Build governed AI/RAG solutions across AWS Bedrock and Google Gemini (GCP for Government), integrating Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft-native datasets where appropriate.

-
Operate the AI control plane (LightLLM) as the central hub for model access, monitoring, cost allocation, and governance, and extend it to additional model paths.

-
Architect scalable data pipelines — aggregation, parsing, chunking, and assembly of source content into work packages that feed RAG and other AI systems.

-
Advance the lab's AI work-planning and control system: ingest Environment, Safety & Health (ES&H) manuals, generate hazard identifications, orchestrate SME approval workflows, and produce formalized work packages.

-
Enforce data governance: handle CUI/SPI appropriately and ensure AI activity logs aggregate into the enterprise SIEM.

-
Own CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code for AI workloads using GitHub Actions and Terraform.

-
Define usage policy for when teams access AI through the control plane vs. directly via platform services (e.g., Vertex AI).

-
Mentor a junior AI engineer and help establish engineering conventions and onboarding standards.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR (REQUIRED)

-
5+ years of professional software / AI engineering experience, with a strong Python foundation.

-
Hands-on experience building LLM / RAG applications — retrieval, chunking strategies, prompt orchestration, and evaluation.

-
Working knowledge of at least one major cloud AI platform: AWS Bedrock and/or Google Vertex AI / Gemini.

-
Infrastructure-as-code (Terraform) and CI/CD (GitHub Actions or equivalent).

-
Practical understanding of security and data governance, including handling of sensitive or controlled data.

-
U.S. citizenship or permanent residency (supports a federal / DOE environment).

-
Ability to provide consistent support during Pacific Time core business hours.

NICE TO HAVE (PREFERRED)

-
Experience in a DOE, national laboratory, FedRAMP, or other regulated, compliance-driven environment.

-
Familiarity with AI gateways / control planes such as LightLLM (or LiteLLM-style proxies) and multi-model governance.

-
Experience using Microsoft Copilot for enterprise RAG use cases.

-
Experience integrating application and AI logging into a SIEM.

-
Comfort transforming unstructured documentation (technical manuals, procedures) into structured, retrievable knowledge.

EMPLOYMENT & ELIGIBILITY

-
Full-time, salaried UGT employee placed on a long-term, dedicated client assignment (this is not a short-term or contract-to-hire role).

-
Remote within the U.S.; occasional ad hoc onsite in the San Francisco Bay Area is helpful but not required.

-
Must reliably support Pacific Time core business hours.

-
U.S. citizenship or permanent residency required; works with CUI/SPI in a DOE environment (no classified or ITAR work).

-
Government-furnished equipment provided for the engagement.
