Job description

Pay for Scopist/Editor: $1.50–$2.50 per page, based on experience and turnaround. We pay

promptly.

Pay for Proofreader: $.80-$1.00 per page, based on experience and turnaround. We pay promptly.

Where: Fully remote, anywhere in the U.S.

Type: Independent contractor, job by job.

MGM Reporting is the digital reporting division of MGM Trial Services. We're looking for experienced scopists to edit deposition transcripts captured through automatic speech recognition.

You'll take a rough ASR draft, work through it against the audio, and produce a finished transcript. That means correcting what the software misheard, punctuating testimony so it reads the way it was spoken, verifying proper names and technical terms, and conforming the whole thing to our formatting standards. Most of our work is medical malpractice, so expect expert testimony thick with clinical terminology.

This is contract work for people who already do it well. You'll work independently from the first job, on your own equipment. What we're screening for is editorial judgment: hearing where a sentence ended, catching a term the software can't have gotten right, noticing when an answer doesn't parse

and going back to the audio.

The Setup

You work from home on your own schedule. Standard turnaround is five business days, and expedited work pays more. You'll need a Windows PC, good headphones, and reliable internet. You won't be guessing at house style. We keep a documented style authority: a reporter preference sheet, a style and text guide, and a formatting specification. Questions of punctuation, number style, and transcript geometry have written answers. Our reporters also capture the proceedings themselves, so when the audio is ambiguous you can ask the person who was in the room.

What We Need

  • Demonstrated ability to edit legal transcripts to a finished standard
  • Command of English grammar, punctuation, and mechanics you'd be comfortable defending
  • Judgment to resolve an ambiguity sensibly, and to know when to flag instead
  • Patience to work against audio carefully and go back a third time when something doesn't sit right
  • Research habits for names, places, and terminology you don't recognize
  • Reliability on deadlines and discretion with sensitive material
  • Your own workstation and software competence

Preferred

  • Proficiency with Eclipse; fluency in another CAT platform considered
  • AAERT CET certification, or NCRA/NVRA credentials
  • Medical or legal terminology background
  • Experience with ASR editing workflows

Company Description

MGM Trial Services has provided cutting-edge litigation support services to the premier law firms in the Mid-Atlantic for over 20 years. This position is an opportunity to participate in one of our fastest-growing divisions. We view this role as a mutual investment, in which you are given the resources to grow with us—to become an asset to our tight-knit team.

We want to cultivate the linguistic precision, editorial judgment, and attention to detail that you already possess. We can provide training on the equipment, software, and workflows. What we value most is your ability to listen attentively, to read fastidiously, and to support clients with confidence. In return, you’ll receive competitive pay and the opportunity to grow into a highly skilled Digital Court Reporter.
