What is contract programming?

Contract programming refers to the practice of hiring software developers or programmers on a contract basis, rather than as permanent employees. These professionals are typically brought in to work on specific projects or for a set period of time, often to address resource gaps or provide specialized expertise. Contract programmers are responsible for designing, writing, testing, and maintaining code according to the requirements set by the client. This arrangement offers flexibility for both the employer and the programmer, as it allows businesses to scale their workforce as needed and gives programmers the opportunity to work on diverse projects.

What are some common challenges faced by contract programmers when working with multiple clients simultaneously?

Contract programmers often juggle projects for several clients at once, which can present challenges in time management, prioritizing tasks, and ensuring clear communication. Balancing different workflows, adapting to various coding standards, and aligning with each client’s expectations require strong organizational and interpersonal skills. It's important to establish transparent timelines, utilize project management tools, and maintain regular check-ins with clients to keep projects on track and avoid misunderstandings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Programmer, you need advanced programming skills, knowledge of multiple programming languages, and a proven track record demonstrated by a relevant degree or portfolio of completed projects. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), project management tools, and sometimes certifications in specific technologies (such as AWS or Microsoft Azure) are commonly expected. Strong communication, time management, and problem-solving abilities help you adapt to diverse client needs and collaborate remotely. These skills enable you to deliver high-quality, on-time solutions while maintaining client satisfaction in a competitive contract environment.

Working in a hands-on lab environment, you will validate software on embedded hardware platforms and contribute to all verification activities related to QNX Power Management features. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys software development, automation, debugging, and continuous quality improvement.

Please note: This position requires regular access to hardware and test labs and is therefore not suitable for remote work.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and optimize automated test cases to continuously improve test coverage, and efficiency

  • Produce detailed test reports based on the results with high accuracy

  • Execute comprehensive test suites on new software builds using reference and customer hardware, and analyze results

  • Maintain test lab environments

  • Create, update, and maintain test plans and test cases based on product requirements and feature specifications

  • Configure, integrate, and validate software deliverables on embedded hardware platforms

  • Collaborate closely with software developers, and fellow test engineers

  • Reproduce and investigate reported issues using systematic debugging and root-cause analysis techniques

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent

  • Strong programming background with 5+ years of experience in Python, C, and shell scripting

  • 5+ years of test automation development experience

  • 5+ years of hands-on Linux experience

  • Knowledge of Power Management testing on different hardware

  • Solid understanding of formal test theory, test methodology, and experience in developing automated tests and testing tools

  • Demonstrated experience writing test plans and test cases, executing tests and reporting results

  • Proven technical leadership and mentoring experience

  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of deliverables

  • Strong organizational skills with a track record of managing multiple priorities while delivering high-quality results

  • Familiar with source versioning, problem reporting and constant integration systems (SVN, Git, JIRA, Jenkins end-to-end CI/CD pipelines)

  • Working knowledge of QNX or other embedded operating system is an asset

  • Ability to write clear, concise, and problem reports

  • Experience in debugging, root-cause analysis, and system validation for embedded hardware and software environments

  • Ability to work and participate in a team setting with an open, collaborative communication style

  • Excellent communication, presentation, and organizational skills

  • Enthusiasm, a passion for quality and a desire to learn new technologies

Why Join QNX?

  • Work on technology deployed in more than 275 million vehicles worldwide

  • Help deliver software used in safety-critical and mission-critical environments
