Contract Programmer information

What is a contract programmer?

A contract programmer is a software developer who is hired on a temporary basis to work on specific projects or tasks for a company. Unlike full-time employees, contract programmers typically work for a set period or until the completion of a particular project. They may work independently or through an agency, and their expertise is often sought for specialized or short-term needs. Contract programmers can work on-site or remotely, and they usually have flexible arrangements regarding hours and workflow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Programmer, you need strong programming skills in relevant languages, a solid understanding of software development methodologies, and typically a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and knowledge of frameworks or cloud platforms are commonly required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and clear communication with clients set top contract programmers apart. These skills ensure the delivery of high-quality, maintainable code that meets client needs and project deadlines in a dynamic work environment.

How do contract programmers typically manage communication and collaboration with client teams while working remotely?

Contract programmers often work off-site, which makes effective communication and collaboration essential for project success. Most clients use project management tools like Jira, Trello, or Asana, and require regular check-ins via video calls, chat platforms, or emails. It’s important for contract programmers to proactively share progress, clarify requirements, and ask questions as needed to stay aligned with the client’s expectations. Building strong communication habits helps ensure timely delivery and fosters a positive working relationship with diverse team members, even when working remotely.

New Millennium
Overview
New Millennium is committed to hiring enthusiastic, dedicated, hardworking, team-oriented individuals who are willing to learn and enjoy working in a challenging, fast paced, dynamic environment regardless of your experience level. We are excited to train the right team members and will provide what you need to enable you to succeed.
New Millennium offers flexible hours, competitive pay, paid vacations up to 4 weeks per year based on length of service, quarterly bonuses, annual profit sharing, annual stock awards, 401k with up to 50% matching, dependent scholarships, employee education assistance, full medical, dental and vision insurance and more. In addition to that, our culture and work environment is very collaborative, highly technical, and extremely rewarding.
New Millennium is part of Steel Dynamics, Inc., one of the largest steel producers in the country with locations throughout the US. As such, we also offer countless opportunities for advancement throughout all divisions of SDI. A New Millennium trained detailer is a high-value candidate for advancement and relocation due to their in-depth knowledge of a wide range of our daily operations.
Responsibilities
As a Detailer for New Millennium, you will:
  • Review structural contract drawings and specifications for non-residential building projects.
  • Interpret the loading diagrams (uplift, snow drift, ponding, etc.) with the assistance of our internal Project Managers and Engineers and apply those load requirements to the steel joists and girders.
  • Analyze connections of steel joists and girders to the supporting members (beams, columns, walls, etc.)
  • Identify special connections that may be required.
  • Coordinate with other trades including structural steel fabricators, precast suppliers, fire protection, HVAC designers, athletic equipment suppliers (basketball goals, etc.) to incorporate the needs of those trades into the joist/girder designs.
  • Identify and apply special joist and girder profile properties (single/double pitch, bowstring/barrel, etc.)
  • Create Joist/Girder/Deck placement plans, sections, and details to reflect New Millennium's interpretation of the contract drawings for the Structural Engineer of Record to review/approve and for the ironworkers who will be erecting the structure, so they know where to install and how to attach our materials in the building.
  • Create Bills of Material for all joists, girders and deck that import into our design program, which then designs and generates shop orders for all joists, girders, deck, bridging, etc.
  • Coordinate with our customers, erectors, GC's and Architect/Engineer of Record to ensure that our products are designed, fabricated, and delivered to the jobsite with the highest quality and on schedule.
  • Other duties as necessary

Qualifications
An ideal candidate would have experience in one or more of the following:
  • Joist/girder/deck or structural steel detailing
  • Structural design/drafting/modelling
  • Working on projects from concept to production
  • Problem solving or quality assurance
  • 2D or 3D cad software
  • Education in civil or mechanical engineering, construction management, design engineering, architectural engineering, etc.
  • Reading and interpreting drawings, sections, specifications and other construction related documents

About Steel Dynamics

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Steel Dynamics is one of the largest and most diversified domestic steel producers and metals recyclers in the United States, with an estimated steelmaking and coating capacity of approximately 13 million tons, and facilities located throughout the United States and in Mexico. We operate using a circular manufacturing model, producing lower-carbon-emission, quality steel using electric arc furnace (EAF) technology with recycled ferrous scrap as the primary input. Our circular economy is powered by our three primary operating platforms: steel, metals recycling, and steel fabrication. Our steel operations produce steel products, including hot roll, cold roll, and coated sheet steel, structural steel beams and shapes, rail, engineered special-bar-quality steel, cold finished steel, merchant bar products, and specialty steel sections. Our metals recycling operations collect and process ferrous and nonferrous scrap from manufacturing and end-of-life items, such as automobiles, appliances, and machinery. This processed scrap is then sold to end-users for reuse, including our EAF steel mills, which produce new steel from the scrapped material. We sell a meaningful amount of steel to our own steel fabrication operations that in turn produce and sell structural steel joist and deck building systems to consumers.
