Job description

The Metal Technician is responsible for the operations of the assigned roll former, stamp, and powder coating line. He or she is responsible for meeting or exceeding productivity, safety, housekeeping, and quality standards within the assigned area. This is a hands-on position that requires strong mechanical and troubleshooting skills.  The employee must be available to work overtime on weekends when required due to the production schedule.

Responsibilities: 

The following duties are considered essential to this position.  Other responsibilities may be assigned.

  • Set up and operate progressive stamping press.
  • Set up and operate the roll forming line and other machinery used in the production process.
  • Set up and operate a powder coating system, including wash line and oven.
  • Read and understand blueprints.
  • Set up tooling, load programs and set machine parameters to ensure optimal performance of the equipment.
  • Test-run new roll form tooling to generate sample parts. Strong knowledge of roll form tooling and ability to evaluate and generate improvement opportunities to tooling and process is preferred.
  • Be able to handle raw material with overhead crane and load roll forming machine with raw material.
  • Be able to determine condition of tools; rework and clean when necessary and verify coolant levels in the equipment.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment with fast changing priorities; report productivity.
  • Keep work area clean and organized.
  • Provide a high level of attention to detail and focus on a given task.
  • Prepare for next coming job to minimize changeover.
  • Work with a variety of hand tools safely.
  • Use measurement and mathematical fraction/decimal conversion skills accurately.
  • Set up presses and down-line equipment to meet quality and safety standards.
  • Resolve production problems concerning machines or materials.
  • Meet production requirements as scheduled.
  • Communicate with the Manager and co-workers concerning department topics.
  • Monitor quality on production lines.  Take corrective action when product does not meet quality standards.
  • Support and comply with safety policies, quality standards, and housekeeping methods at all times.

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred. Strong knowledge of roll form tooling and ability to evaluate and generate improvement opportunities to tooling and process is preferred.  Experience working with a variety of hand tools required.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. 
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. 
  • Ability to speak effectively before the group of employees that he or she supervises.
  • Measurement and mathematical fraction/decimal conversion skills required.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written and oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.  Be highly detail-oriented and focused.
  • Ability to enter data into established databases and spreadsheets.

This is a physically active position in a manufacturing facility.  While performing the duties of this job, this employee is regularly required to stand, walk, climb, stoop, kneel or crawl, effectively communicate with others and use active listening skills. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Vision ability requirements for this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.  This is a full-time position.  Due to fluctuations in production schedules, however, this employee may be required to work additional hours to meet additional demands.

The Anticipated Pay Range for This Position:  $23.00-$35.00 hourly
