Contract Pipeline Inspector information

What is a contract pipeline inspector?

Contract Pipeline Inspectors are professionals hired on a contract basis to oversee the construction, maintenance, and safety of pipelines transporting oil, gas, or other substances. They are responsible for ensuring that pipeline projects comply with industry standards, government regulations, and safety protocols. Their duties include inspecting materials, monitoring construction activities, and documenting any issues or violations. Contract Pipeline Inspectors play a critical role in preventing leaks, ensuring environmental protection, and maintaining the integrity of pipeline systems.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a contract pipeline inspector?

To thrive as a Contract Pipeline Inspector, you need expertise in pipeline construction standards, regulatory compliance, and inspection protocols, typically backed by relevant certifications such as API 1169 or NACE. Familiarity with inspection software, GPS mapping tools, and documentation systems is essential for accurate reporting and data management. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and problem-solving skills help inspectors identify issues and collaborate with contractors. These skills ensure the safety, integrity, and regulatory compliance of pipeline projects, protecting both the environment and public safety.

What are common challenges faced by contract pipeline inspectors, and how can they be managed?

Contract Pipeline Inspectors often encounter challenges such as working in remote locations, adhering to strict safety regulations, and managing tight project deadlines. Effective communication with construction crews, project managers, and other inspectors is crucial for resolving issues quickly and maintaining compliance. Staying organized, keeping detailed records, and proactively identifying potential problems can help inspectors manage these challenges and ensure the integrity and safety of pipeline installations.

Job description

Job Opportunity: Project Manager, LiDAR Data Deliverables

Employee type: Full time, Permanent

Location: Calgary, AB (preferred)

ABOUT THE ROLE

Airborne Imaging is looking for an experienced Project Manager and LiDAR Data Deliverable Specialist to join our growing geospatial team. This is a senior role at the intersection of technical production and client engagement, a great fit for a seasoned professional who thrives in a fast-paced, high-volume environment and takes pride in delivering exceptional LiDAR data products on time and to specification.

You'll own the full lifecycle of LiDAR deliverable production: coordinating internally across acquisition, processing, and QA teams, and serving as a confident, knowledgeable point of contact for clients from project kick-off through final delivery.

WHO WE ARE

Airborne Imaging is a Forsite company, providing high-resolution, cost-effective aerial LiDAR and geospatial mapping services. With decades of experience and proven technology and methodology, the team manages projects of any size, anywhere in the world.

Forsite (forsitegeo.com) is a geospatial intelligence company operating across Canada and the United States. We bring together aerial LiDAR acquisition, pipeline patrol and inspection, forest management, wildfire risk science, and environmental analytics under one roof, giving utilities, energy operators, land managers, government agencies, and insurers a single partner for the complete intelligence picture their operations depend on. Formed through the unification of six established organizations, Barr Air Patrol, Barr GeoSpatial Solutions, Airborne Imaging Inc., Northwest Management Inc., Forcorp and Forsite Consultants Ltd., Forsite combines more than 85 years of aerial heritage, North America's largest independent aerial LiDAR library, and decades of on-the-ground forestry and wildfire expertise into a single integrated platform.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Manage multiple concurrent LiDAR deliverable projects from intake to final acceptance, maintaining quality and schedule under production pressure
  • Prepare LiDAR deliverables from classified point cloud using internal tools as well as other geospatial/GIS packages
  • Serve as the primary client-facing representative for deliverable scoping, progress updates, issue resolution, and sign-off
  • Review and QA LiDAR data products against client specifications, industry standards, and contract requirements
  • Coordinate with processing teams to ensure deliverables meet format, datum, projection, and classification requirements
  • Develop and maintain project schedules, track milestones, and communicate proactively when timelines are at risk
  • Author and review technical documentation, delivery reports, and metadata
  • Support continuous improvement of production workflows and deliverable standards

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

Forsite welcomes applicants from all backgrounds and is looking for the right person to join our team. If you don't meet every requirement but bring relevant skills, experience and a great attitude, we encourage you to apply!

Must have:

  • 10-15 years of hands-on experience in LiDAR deliverable production, with demonstrated progression into a lead or management role
  • Deep familiarity with LiDAR deliverable formats, including point clouds (LAS/LAZ), classified datasets, bare earth and surface models (DEMs/DSMs), intensity rasters, and contour products
  • Proficiency with TerraScan software in a production context
  • Strong working knowledge of horizontal and vertical datums, coordinate reference systems, and map projections (NAD83, NAD83(CSRS), UTM, State Plane, etc.)
  • A proven track record producing and managing high-volume, deadline-driven production workflows with multiple simultaneous projects
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical detail for both specialist and non-specialist audiences
  • A professional, polished, and confident presence in client-facing settings, comfortable leading calls, presenting findings, and managing client expectations

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with airborne LiDAR acquisition operations (flight planning, sensor management, or mission review)
  • Proficiency with GIS platforms including ArcGIS, Global Mapper, and QGIS
  • Familiarity with ASPRS LAS classification standards and LiDAR accuracy assessment methodologies
  • Background in forestry, utilities, transportation, or resource sector LiDAR applications
  • Experience with LAStools or similar point cloud utilities
  • Prior project management experience

WHAT WE PROVIDE

We offer aflexible and rewarding work environment, including:

  • A collaborative, technically sophisticated team working on high-impact projects across Canada and the U.S.
  • Competitive compensation commensurate with experience
  • Flexible work arrangements for the right candidate

Airborne Imaging, a Forsite company, is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applications from all qualified individuals.

We thank all applicants for their interest; however, only candidates selected for interviews will be contacted.
