What is a contract physical design engineer?

Contract Physical Design Engineers are professionals who specialize in the layout and implementation of integrated circuits (ICs) for semiconductor devices, typically working on a temporary or project-based basis. They focus on transforming circuit designs into physical layouts that can be fabricated on silicon chips, ensuring optimal performance, power, and area efficiency. Their work involves tasks such as floorplanning, placement, routing, timing analysis, and design rule checking. Contract roles allow companies flexibility in staffing for specific projects or peak development periods, and engineers in these positions often work for consulting firms or as independent contractors.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract physical design engineer?

A Contract Physical Design Engineer typically requires a solid background in electrical engineering, strong knowledge of VLSI design, and hands-on experience with ASIC or FPGA physical implementation. Familiarity with EDA tools such as Synopsys ICC2, Cadence Innovus, and scripting languages like Tcl and Perl, as well as understanding of industry standards, is crucial. Standout soft skills include strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication for collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure the engineer can deliver optimized, manufacturable chip layouts on time and within specification, which is vital for project and product success.

What are some common challenges faced by contract physical design engineers when joining new projects or teams?

Contract Physical Design Engineers often need to quickly adapt to new workflows, proprietary tools, and unique design methodologies used by different clients or teams. They may also face tight project timelines and the need to rapidly understand complex chip architectures. Effective communication and collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as verification and RTL design engineers, are critical to ensure design hand-offs and resolve issues efficiently. Flexibility, strong organizational skills, and a proactive approach to learning new environments are key to overcoming these challenges.

The engineer works handsโ€‘on with TPS soft goods, composites, and engineered surface finishes, supporting the full lifecycle from concept and design through prototyping, manufacturing, and production. The role requires close collaboration with crossโ€‘functional teams to ensure manufacturability, performance optimization, and compliance with aerospace and defense standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the design, development and manufacturing of mechanical components and assemblies for Heraโ€™s industry-leading thermal protection systems (TPS), including soft goods, composites, and engineered surface finishes.
  • Collaborate with crossโ€‘functional teams to develop and implement scalable manufacturing and assembly processes that ensure quality, efficiency, and compliance with aerospace and defense standards.
  • Create and maintain process documentation and controls to support consistent production outcomes and optimize throughput across design, prototyping, and manufacturing phases.
  • Utilize traditional and advanced manufacturing techniques for metallics, composites, and other materials used in thermal protection systems and critical aerospace structures, ensuring performance, durability, and production scalability.
  • Prototype and test advanced materialsโ€”including carbon fiber composites, high-temperature elastomers, and reinforced fabricsโ€”iterating based on performance data and failure analysis.
  • Investigate material failures, process anomalies, and manufacturing defects by leading root cause analyses to implement corrective actions in both development and production phases.
Required Qualifications
  • 4+ years of mechanical design and manufacturing experience, with emphasis on metallic, composites and thermal protection systems (TPS).
  • Proven leadership in engineering projects involving design, prototyping, and production of mechanical systems, including soft goods and polymer-based components.
  • Handsโ€‘on experience with advanced materials and mechanical components in aerospace or defense applications, including TPS and engineered surface finishes.
  • Strong understanding of elastomer and composite manufacturing processes, material properties, and relevant aerospace testing standards.
  • Proficient in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks) with the ability to produce highโ€‘quality, productionโ€‘ready engineering drawings.
  • Solid foundation in engineering principles including structures, materials science, thermal management, and mechanical system design.
  • Skilled in prototyping and fabrication techniques such as machining, composite layups, bonding and mechanical assembly.
  • Expertise in creating manufacturing and build plans/procedures for variety of customer products and assemblies with respect to industry standards or customer supplied specifications.
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field, or equivalent industry experience in advanced material applications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficient in SolidWorks or similar CAD/CAM tools, with experience using PLM systems to manage design and production workflows.
