Contract Oracle Database Administrators (DBAs) are IT professionals hired on a temporary or project basis to manage, maintain, and optimize Oracle database systems for organizations. They are responsible for tasks such as database installation, configuration, performance tuning, security management, backup and recovery, and troubleshooting issues. Unlike full-time employees, contract DBAs work for a set period or on specific projects, often providing specialized expertise or support during peak workloads or system migrations. Their flexible arrangements allow companies to access top Oracle database talent without the commitment of permanent employment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract Oracle Database Administrator?

To thrive as a Contract Oracle Database Administrator, you need deep expertise in Oracle database architecture, performance tuning, backup and recovery, and a strong understanding of SQL and PL/SQL, usually supported by a relevant degree and professional experience. Contractors often need to rapidly familiarize themselves with existing database architectures, security protocols, and documentation standards while building trust with permanent staff. Details from Client
Data curation is the process of creating, organizing and maintaining data sets so they can be accessed and used by people looking for information. It involves collecting, structuring, indexing and cataloging data for users in an organization, group or the general public. Data can be curated to support business decision-making, academic needs, scientific research and other purposes.

Most of this role will be managing customer data requests. For example, a customer has data that needs to be imported into our R&D database or there are corrections that need to be made to the data, etc.  We are operating in an R&D setting and we don't always have application features created to handle adhoc data modification requests from our users.   This position fills that gap. I'd say the other 10% of the time is doing real DBA work.  That would include schema migration, database security, managing db resources, etc.

Summary of Job Description

This is a database administration position. This individual will lead the design and development of relational databases, potentially directing the work of other database engineers.

Position Requirements

  • Significant experience in application of relational database design concepts and lifecycle management, including management of technical debt.
  • Significant experience with software development methodologies, especially Agile, Scrum, etc., including implementation of incremental feature changes.
  • Ability to perform relational database schema development, support, query development, and query tuning unassisted.
  • Ability to work with both conventional and cloud-hosted (e.g., AWS) databases.
  • Collaboration with life sciences professionals generating experimental data.
  • Participation in project planning, including estimation and sequencing of work.
  • Mentoring of new/junior team members.
  • Communication, collaboration, and time management skills.
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Effective in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail.

Typical experience, skills and qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related scientific or engineering discipline, or equivalent experience; Master's degree preferred.
  • 8 or more years of professional experience in relational database administration (e.g., Oracle, PostgreSQL), with some cloud (e.g., AWS) experience preferred.
  • Experience in an ISO/FDA regulated environment as a member of a product development organization (medical device or biotech industry) preferred.

I think we are looking at someone with strong SQL skills and Oracle DBA experience.
