Job description

Duties Description Individuals selected must be able to respond to emergency callout within 1 hour during inclement weather, including all snow and ice conditions, to be considered for this position. Duties include, but are not limited to: Perform routine manual tasks requiring medium to heavy physical effort involving exposure to all kinds of weather conditions. Will be expected to operate plows during winter operations and to obtain the equipment certifications listed below.

Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the Department's response to regional and statewide emergency situations. Minimum Qualifications Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1: Must be 18 years old, pass physical/medical examination and drug test*, and possess a Class D Driver License. Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2: Must be 18 years old, pass physical/medical examination* and drug test; and possess a Class A or B Commercial Driver License with no airbrake restriction.

Candidates will be evaluated on their ability to satisfactorily operate a NYSDOT large dump truck within two weeks of appointment. Failure to pass will result in termination. Highway Maintenance Worker 1: Satisfactory completion of the Highway Maintenance Worker Traineeship 2 or one year of experience in the operation of highway construction, maintenance equipment, or other vehicles in excess of 26,000 Gross Vehicle Weight Rating with air brakes and possession of a Class A or B Commercial Driver License with DOT-specified endorsements, and two NYSDOT equipment operation certifications, in addition to the following three specific certifications: heavy dump truck, one person plowing with single or double wing, and front-end loader.

Within the first two weeks of employment, applicant must satisfactorily complete NYSDOT Heavy Dump Certification or their employment will be terminated. NOTE: All candidates must pass a pre-employment physical/medical examination* and drug test prior to beginning employment. Cannabis use is not permitted for employees in this title and assignment.

Cannabis use will be tested for during the pre-employment screening process and may be the basis for disqualification for employment or may be a basis for removal from employment. *Candidates who meet both of the following MAY be eligible to bypass the pre-employment physical: A valid CDL A or B AND a current (less than 2 years old) CDL Medical Certificate (form MCSA 5876) that meets specific criteria which will be discussed at the time of interview. Additional Comments The starting salary for the Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1 is $52,606.

This amount is comprised of the base salary of $43,606 with an additional geographic pay differential of $9,000, specific to this title and location. The starting salary for the Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2 is $54,809. This amount is comprised of the base salary of $45,809 with an additional geographic pay differential of $9,000, specific to this title and location.

The starting salary for the Highway Maintenance Worker 1 is $57,183. This amount is comprised of the base salary of $48,183 with an additional geographic pay differential of $9,000, specific to this title and location. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

The salary range listed reflects the full range for this graded position. For new State employees appointed into graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
