To thrive as a Contract Navy Software Engineer, you need expertise in software development, systems engineering, and a solid understanding of defense or military protocols, with at least a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with secure coding practices, DoD-approved development environments, and certifications such as Security+ or CISSP are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are crucial for collaborating on complex, mission-critical projects. These skills and qualifications ensure that software solutions are reliable, secure, and meet stringent Navy operational requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by Contract Navy Software Engineers when working on defense projects?

Contract Navy Software Engineers often encounter unique challenges such as navigating strict security protocols, adapting to rapidly changing project requirements, and integrating new software with legacy naval systems. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams—including military personnel and civilian contractors—requires clear communication and flexibility. Successfully managing these challenges not only ensures project success but also builds valuable experience for advancing to more senior or specialized defense engineering roles.

What are Contract Navy Software Engineers?

Contract Navy Software Engineers are professionals who work on a contractual basis to develop, maintain, and improve software systems used by the Navy. They are typically employed by private companies that have contracts with the Navy, rather than being enlisted military personnel. Their work can include creating embedded systems, cybersecurity solutions, data analysis platforms, or software for shipboard and shore-based operations. These engineers must meet specific security clearance requirements and often need to be familiar with Department of Defense (DoD) standards and protocols. Their contributions are critical to ensuring the reliability and security of Navy technology.

Job description

About The Role
The AI Enablement Engineer serves as a force multiplier for the Software Development organization and, over time, IT as a whole. Using discretion and independent judgment, this engineer builds AI development frameworks, infrastructure-as-code practices, and CI/CD pipelines that make the development team faster and more consistent-then extends that capability into internal AI-powered tools and workflows for business stakeholders
What You'll Do
  • Build and maintain Cursor workspace configurations, rules files, prompt templates, and context pipelines for the team's .NET and React/JS codebases.
  • Create structured LLM workflows (Claude, Gemini) for BSAs to generate PRDs, ERDs, and API contracts that feed directly into Cursor as development context.
  • Design and implement IaC frameworks (Terraform, Pulumi, or OpenTofu) to manage Azure App Services, Azure SQL, Azure Functions, and supporting infrastructure.
  • Improve CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions) with automated testing, quality gates, security scanning, and zero-downtime deployment patterns.
  • Build environment provisioning automation for dev, staging, and production without manual Azure portal configuration.
  • Support Microsoft Fabric data platform through IaC patterns, CI/CD for data pipelines, and developer environment connectivity.
  • Conduct hands-on developer training and monthly AI office hours on Cursor usage, prompt patterns, and AI-assisted workflows.
  • Define and instrument AI adoption metrics: Cursor usage rates, AI-assisted PRD completion, pipeline health, and context quality scores

Requirements
What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in CS, Software Engineering, IT, or related field. Equivalent experience considered.
  • 5+ years in software engineering, DevOps, or platform engineering.
  • Hands-on experience with open-source IaC tools (Terraform, Pulumi, or OpenTofu) managing Azure resources.
  • Strong CI/CD pipeline experience in Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions with automated testing, quality gates, and deployment automation.
  • Power-user experience with AI-assisted dev tools (Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or equivalent) with team-level enablement beyond personal use.
  • Strong communication skills with ability to create technical documentation and training materials.
  • Experience with scripting and automation (PowerShell, Bash, Python, or similar).

Benefits
Why You Will Love Working Here
  • Competitive compensation and benefits package:
    • Medical, dental, vision coverage
    • Financial Planning
    • Time Off & Life Balance
    • Family & Lifestyle
  • Opportunities for growth and development
  • Culture that is collaborative, inclusive, fast-paced, people-first
  • Stable company with strong reputation in the market
