What is a Contract MSAT Process Engineer?

A Contract MSAT (Manufacturing Science and Technology) Process Engineer is a professional who works on a temporary or project-based contract to support the development, optimization, and troubleshooting of manufacturing processes in industries such as pharmaceuticals or biotechnology. Their primary role is to ensure processes are efficient, compliant, and capable of producing high-quality products. They often collaborate with other departments, such as quality assurance and production, to implement process improvements, technology transfers, and scale-up activities. Contract positions typically mean the engineer is hired for a specific project or period rather than as a permanent employee.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract MSAT Process Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract MSAT (Manufacturing Science and Technology) Process Engineer, you need a strong background in chemical or biochemical engineering, process optimization, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with process simulation software (like Aspen or SuperPro), statistical analysis tools, and regulatory compliance standards such as cGMP is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help drive cross-functional collaboration and process improvements. These competencies ensure efficient, compliant manufacturing processes and successful technology transfer in a highly regulated industry.

What engineers make $200,000 a year?

Senior engineers in fields such as software, petroleum, aerospace, and electrical engineering often earn $200,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and in high-demand industries. Roles requiring specialized certifications, leadership responsibilities, or working in high-cost regions tend to have higher compensation levels.

What does an MSAT engineer do?

An MSAT (Manufacturing Science and Technology) engineer is responsible for supporting the development, optimization, and troubleshooting of manufacturing processes, often in the biopharmaceutical or chemical industries. They work closely with production teams, utilize process analytical tools, and ensure compliance with quality standards to improve process efficiency and product quality.

What are some common challenges faced by Contract MSAT Process Engineers during technology transfer projects?

Contract MSAT Process Engineers often encounter challenges such as aligning process specifications between sending and receiving sites, troubleshooting unexpected deviations during scale-up, and ensuring thorough documentation for regulatory compliance. Communication with cross-functional teams—including manufacturing, quality assurance, and R&D—is critical to anticipate and resolve issues quickly. Additionally, adapting to varying site capabilities and timelines requires strong project management and flexibility to deliver successful technology transfers.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum, aerospace, or software engineering with extensive experience and advanced skills can earn $500,000 or more annually. Job description

Job Title: PFMEA Engineer

Job Description

This role focuses on leveraging existing manufacturing engineering experience to develop, refine, and maintain Process Failure Mode and Effects Analyses (PFMEAs) within an automotive environment. The Manufacturing Process Engineer collaborates closely with product development and failure mode avoidance (FMA) experts to ensure robust manufacturing controls, accurate risk assessments, and compliance with internal standards and audit requirements. The position requires strong technical expertise, cross-functional communication, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic setting.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize prior manufacturing engineering experience to create, update, and populate PFMEAs with accurate process steps, potential failure modes, and associated controls.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product development teams to obtain and interpret design inputs required for PFMEAs.
  • Locate and review Design Failure Mode and Effects Analyses (DFMEAs) in the internal repository and extract severity ratings and failure effects for use in PFMEAs.
  • Work closely with failure mode avoidance (FMA) experts to identify, address, and correct PFMEA audit discrepancies and ensure alignment with internal standards.
  • Evaluate existing manufacturing controls to determine whether PFMEA detection methods can be improved and recommend enhancements where appropriate.
  • Upload deviation proof and related documentation into required systems such as Jira and E2KS and ensure PFMEAs are updated to the latest standard.
  • Obtain supervisor approval and signatures on completed or revised PFMEAs and upload final versions to the FEDE workbench.
  • Use tools such as Teamcenter and GSPAS to support process engineering activities and maintain accurate process documentation.
  • Manage multiple concurrent PFMEA and process engineering tasks while meeting deadlines and quality expectations.
  • Communicate effectively with cross-functional stakeholders to clarify requirements, share status updates, and resolve issues in a timely manner.

Essential Skills

  • 3–5 years of experience as a Manufacturing Engineer within the automotive industry.
  • Hands-on experience with Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA).
  • Experience with failure mode avoidance (FMA) methodologies and PFMEA processes.
  • Understanding of installation processes for vehicle parts and related process engineering principles.
  • Experience in manufacturing engineering within an automotive or OEM environment.
  • Proficiency with GSPAS for process-related activities.
  • Proficiency with Teamcenter for managing engineering and process data.
  • Ability and familiarity with Excel for data analysis, documentation, and reporting.
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or a related field.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Familiarity with manufacturing environments and production processes in original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Flexibility to adapt to a dynamic working environment and collaborate with a diverse team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Proven experience collaborating with cross-functional teams, including product development and quality.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while also contributing effectively in team settings.
  • Experience using internal web-based tools and systems to access engineering and process information.
