Contract Mining information

What is contract mining?

Contract mining is a business model where a mining company hires an external contractor to carry out mining operations instead of performing the work with its own staff and equipment. This can include tasks such as drilling, blasting, hauling, and ore processing. Contract mining allows companies to access specialized expertise, reduce capital expenditure, and improve operational efficiency. It is commonly used in both surface and underground mining projects to help optimize costs and manage risks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract miner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Miner, you need practical experience in mining operations, a sound understanding of safety regulations, and typically a relevant vocational qualification or trade certification. Familiarity with mining equipment, machinery, and industry-specific software such as mine planning systems is important. Strong teamwork, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help ensure safe and efficient project execution. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining operational safety, meeting production targets, and collaborating effectively within variable mining environments.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in contract mining, and how are they typically addressed?

Professionals in contract mining often face challenges such as tight project deadlines, fluctuating commodity prices, and adapting to diverse client requirements across different sites. Managing safety and environmental compliance in varying conditions is also a key concern. These challenges are typically addressed through robust project planning, maintaining open communication with clients, investing in staff training, and implementing rigorous safety protocols. Many contract mining teams also use advanced technology and data analytics to optimize operations and minimize downtime.

Contract Mining involves managing and executing mining operations, focusing on extraction and production. Mine Surveyors specialize in mapping, measuring, and planning mining sites. While both roles are essential in mining, Contract Mining covers operational management, whereas Mine Surveyors focus on spatial data and site planning.

This position will provide technical leadership for geological programs supporting exploration, resource evaluation, mine development, and overall project advancement. The Senior Geologist will lead core logging, geological interpretation and modeling, drilling programs, QA/QC activities, and geological data management while collaborating closely with engineering, mining, metallurgical, and environmental teams.

This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on geologist with strong technical capabilities and leadership experience who wants to play an important role in advancing a significant mineral development project.

Key Responsibilities
  • Promote and maintain strong health, safety, and environmental practices across geological activities.
  • Lead diamond drill core and RC chip logging, sampling, and geological interpretation.
  • Mentor and provide technical oversight to junior geologists, core technicians, and contract personnel.
  • Ensure consistent, high-quality geological data capture and achievement of core logging, cutting, and sampling objectives.
  • Ensure established QA/QC protocols are followed for drilling and sampling activities.
  • Design and oversee drilling programs focused on resource confirmation, infill drilling, and exploration.
  • Monitor active drill rigs, drilling progress, and core recovery while coordinating with drillers and drill supervisors.
  • Validate collar, downhole survey, and other drilling data prior to database entry.
  • Lead geological mapping, sampling, and cross-section interpretation.
  • Develop and maintain geological models, cross-sections, and supporting datasets.
  • Interpret geological, geochemical, geophysical, and structural data to support mine development and exploration programs.
  • Support mineral resource estimation and classification by developing geological domains and wireframes for resource modeling.
  • Prepare technical presentations, summaries, and program updates for management.
  • Collaborate across technical disciplines to support project and mine-development objectives.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology or a related field.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in mineral exploration, mine geology, resource geology, or a related discipline.
  • Experience supporting and overseeing drilling programs and geological modeling.
  • Experience with industry-standard GIS, 3D geological interpretation, and geological data systems, such as Leapfrog Geo, ArcGIS, or comparable software.
  • Strong knowledge of sampling protocols, QA/QC procedures, core logging practices, RQD, oriented core technology, and geological databases.
  • Experience with geological mapping and interpretation of structural and geophysical data.
  • Previous experience working with porphyry copper deposits.
  • Open-pit mining experience is preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to safely operate four-wheel-drive vehicles in remote and rugged terrain.
  • Ability to successfully complete required pre-employment screening and background-check requirements.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to understand, follow, and communicate work assignments, procedures, and safety requirements in English.
  • Ability to frequently sit, stand, and walk.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
