Key Position Details:
This position will cover the following departments:
Hematology, Coagulation, Special Coagulation, and Urinalysis
  • 1.0 FTE (80 hours per two week pay period)
  • 8-hour Day shifts

Job Description:
Collaborates with pathologists to develop, coordinate, and implement standardized laboratory instrumentation and testing procedures in assigned laboratory specialty areas. Serves as the document owner of technical policies, procedures, forms, and miscellaneous documents and develops the annual competency program for the associated laboratory specialty. Provides direction to technical laboratory staff across all sites, addresses questions from internal and external customers, and functions as a liaison to pathologists.

Principle Responsibilities
  • Directs, develops, and maintains multi-site departmental technical procedures and material resources.
    • Monitors and oversees implementation of technical systems & process improvements to meet or exceed quality, service, and financial targets.
    • Achieves standardization, proficiency, accuracy, and economy in test result production.
    • Provides on-site technical expertise & communication as needed.
    • Responsible for next level escalation on customer service technical issues.
    • Serves on interdisciplinary committees to plan and implement system wide initiatives.
    • Leads laboratory technical resource meetings.
    • Develops and maintains technical policies, procedures, forms, and miscellaneous documents.
    • Participates in procedure writing, technical procedures, forms, misc. documents, method validation, and implementation.
  • Financial Management of Cost Center(s).
    • Supports the development and implementation of supply budgets for technical specialty areas in partnership with the laboratory operations leaders.
    • Supports laboratory operations leaders in investigating supply budget variances.
  • Provides clinical consultation to the laboratory, pathologists, professional medical staff and other providers.
    • Provides consultation on abnormal and difficult results for physicians, professional medical staff and clients.
    • Serves as liaison with medical staff and other caregivers.
    • Provides continuing education to technical staff.
    • Reviews reports and prepares cases for final sign out to assigned specialty area.
    • Provides guidance for appropriate test utilization.
    • Serves on interdisciplinary committees to plan and implement Allina Health initiatives.
    • Provides on-site technical expertise & communication.
  • Researches, develops, and coordinates implementation of new test systems and instrumentation.
    • Communicates and confirms need for new instrumentation/test system with key stakeholders.
    • Develops, directs and implements project plans in coordination with key stakeholders to meet or exceed quality, service and financial targets.
    • Achieves standardization, proficiency, accuracy, and economy in test result production.
    • Identifies and ensures key metrics, including but not limited to: quality, accuracy, regulatory, IS
    • Communicates and collaborates with supply chain, finance and lab operations throughout project.
    • Develops training plans to ensure high level of competency of staff.
    • Develops and maintains technical policies, procedures, forms, and miscellaneous documents.
  • Maintains regulatory compliance in areas of oversight.
    • Ensures inspection readiness for all assigned technical area(s).
    • Leads Allina Health Lab technical resource meetings as required by specialty.
    • Directs and ensures all procedures/policies are up to date, meet regulatory and compliance requirements, and in document control.
    • Participates in off-site regulatory system inspection.
    • Oversees and ensures employee technical training documents and competencies meet regulatory requirements.
    • Ensures compliance with all regulatory standards including those from CMS, CAP, OSHA, COLA, CLIA, JCAHO and HIPA.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in medical technology or clinical lab science or related health science from a regionally accredited university
  • 7+ years experience in specialty area of high or moderate complexity laboratory
  • 0 to 2 years implementation of continuous process improvement strategies
  • 0 to 2 years determining laboratory medicine best practices
  • 0 to 2 years providing technical oversight of a clinical laboratory in specialty area
  • CLIA defined Qualifications 493.1449 Technical Supervisor qualifications
  • CLIA defined Qualifications 493.1411 Technical Consultant Qualifications

Licenses/Certifications
  • MLS or Cytotechnologist (CT), or Histotechnologist (HTL) certification required by a recognized agency such as ASCP, AMT or NCA, as required by specialty area
  • Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments meets 1988 regulations and is board certified in specialty area required upon hire

Physical Demands

  • Lifting weight up to 20 lbs. occasionally, up to 10 lbs. frequently

Pay Range
Pay Range: $41.28 to $57.11 per hour
The pay described reflects the base hiring pay range. Your starting rate would depend on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, your experience, education, and the union agreement (if applicable). Shift, weekend and/or other differentials may be available to increase your pay rate for certain shifts or work.
