Job description

POSITION TYPE: Professional      
ADMINISTRATIVE UNIT: WV Schools of Diversion and Transition
EMPLOYMENT TERM:  240 Days
TYPICAL WORK HOURS: Operating hours of host agency, as specified by the school principal.
SALARY:  Pursuant to WV Code 18A-4-17, salary based on experience and education level per CBOE salary schedule plus competitive benefits package (WVSDT Benefits & Total Rewards) equal to approximately 35% of direct compensation.
JOB SUMMARY: Provide instruction to ensure that students meet learning objectives and standards for the appropriate content.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Implements the WV Schools of Diversion and Transition approved program of study.
  2. Fosters a classroom climate conducive to learning.
  3. Utilizes instructional techniques and methods which increase student learning.
  4. Monitors student progress toward mastery of instructional goals and objectives.
  5. Promotes and maintains positive student-teacher and interagency lines of communication.
  6. Meets professional responsibilities.
  7. Complies with host agency's policies and procedures and works in a cooperative manner with host agency staff to ensure a safe and secure environment and the integration of treatment and educational goals.
  8. Maintains and upgrades professional skills.
  9. Maintains appropriate tool control utilizing proper inventory and security of all tools, equipment, and consumable supplies.
  10. Maintain a safe and secure classroom, ensuring students pass all safety components for their program of study including OSHA 10.
  11. Develop lessons that align with the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) curriculum.
  12. Prepare students for certification through the American Welding Society (AWS) in SMAW, GMAW, plate and pipe.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned by the principal.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:
  1. Qualifies for or holds West Virginia Career and Technical Education Licensure, as required under State Board of Education Policy 5202 to teach Welding Technology.
    • Wage-Earning Experience - HS diploma with four years (8,000 clock hours) of satisfactory and reasonably continuous work experience in the welding field; OR
    • Bachelor's Degree. - Hold a bachelor's degree AND complete two years (4,000 clock hours) of satisfactory and reasonably continuous work experience in the area for which licensure is requested; OR
    • Associate Degree. - Hold an Associate Degree in an area related to the specialization AND complete two (2) years (4,000 clock hours) of satisfactory and reasonably continuous work experience in the area for which licensure is requested.
    • Completion of a full year of training from an approved education program in the specialization may count toward a half year of the work experience requirements. Relevant teaching experience may count as equal to work experience requirements.
  2. Industry candidates must pass Basic Skills (CBEST reading, writing, mathematics) and attend the required CTE teacher training program as prescribed by the West Virginia Department of Education. 
  3. Must possess the following credentials from either the American Welding Society (AWS) or WVDE approved welding certification test site:
    • SMAW Plate and GMAW Plate in the 2G, 3G, and 4G positions.  (SMAW and GMAW Pipe in the 6G positions exceeds the minimum plate requirements.)
  4. Upon employment, the successful candidate will assist with the process of the school becoming an American Welding Society (AWS) Official Testing Site. This includes obtaining a CWI.
  5. Meets testing requirements as outlined in the West Virginia CTE Endorsement and Testing Manual maintained on the WVDE website.
  6. Possesses the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully; (a) perform the job requirements (b) work within a correctional setting and (c) work as part of an education and rehabilitation team in concert with others.
 
      DESIRED:
  1. Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) preferred.
  2. Experience in working in a correctional facility.
  3. Experience in working in an interagency setting.
  4. A strong understanding of the characteristics of the adult learner.
  5. Ability to operate a CNC lathe.
  6. Experience in working with sheet metal.
  7. Experience in working in a machine shop.

EMPLOYMENT RELATIONSHIP:
Department of Education staff are employed upon recommendation of the State Superintendent of Schools and are state employees.  No representative or employee of the state is authorized to enter into any employment contract or other agreement.  Department staff work under the direction of the State Superintendent of Schools for the general supervision of the free schools in the state and implementing the policies of the board and other necessary tasks as determined by the State Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee.  Each employee is "at-will" and subject to termination by the State Superintendent of Schools at any time, with or without notice, cause or compensation.
The employment relationship between the State Superintendent of Schools and the employee may be terminated by either party.  Reasons for termination by the State Superintendent of Schools include, but are not limited to, immorality, incompetency, cruelty, insubordination, intemperance, willful neglect of duty, unsatisfactory performance, the conviction of a felony or a guilty plea or a plea of no contest to a felony charge, misuse of funds or property, violations of law or policies of the state board, lack of need, or a lack or loss of funding.
