Their role is crucial for maintaining quality and consistency when products are manufactured under contract agreements.

How does a contract manufacturing technical writer typically collaborate with engineering and quality assurance teams?

A Contract Manufacturing Technical Writer frequently works alongside engineering and quality assurance teams to develop and refine documentation such as manufacturing process instructions, standard operating procedures, and compliance reports. Collaboration often involves gathering detailed technical information from subject matter experts, participating in cross-functional meetings, and ensuring all documents meet regulatory standards and company guidelines. This teamwork is essential to accurately translate complex technical processes into clear and usable documents for manufacturing personnel, supporting both production efficiency and regulatory compliance.

Job description

Job Description & Responsibilities

Persistent Systems is seeking a Technical Writer to support the development, maintenance, and delivery of technical documentation for Persistent Systems' industry-leading Wave Relay mobile ad hoc networking products and Government programs. This position will have a key role supporting a government sustainment program, including the development, coordination, and delivery of Contract Data Requirements List (CDRL) deliverables, technical manuals, procedures, reports, and other program documentation. The Technical Writer will work closely with program engineering, systems engineering, cybersecurity, field support, and program management teams to translate complex technical information into accurate, clear, and contract-compliant documentation. The ideal candidate has strong technical writing and document management skills, is comfortable working directly with engineers and technical subject matter experts and understands the documentation rigor required to support U.S. Government and Department of Defense programs.

Position Responsibilities

  • Develop, edit, format, maintain, and coordinate CDRLs and other contractual technical deliverables for a government sustainment program
  • Review applicable Contract Data Requirements Lists (DD Form 1423), Data Item Descriptions (DIDs), Statements of Work (SOW/PWS), specifications, and contractual requirements to ensure deliverables meet required content, format, and submission criteria
  • Work with Program Engineering, Program Management, and other stakeholders to collect technical data and develop recurring, event-driven, and one-time Government deliverables
  • Develop and maintain technical manuals, installation procedures, maintenance procedures, troubleshooting guides, system descriptions, test documentation, engineering reports, and other end-user documentation
  • Review and edit existing documentation for technical accuracy, completeness, clarity, consistency, usability, grammar, and compliance with program requirements
  • Execute or validate documented procedures when appropriate to identify gaps, ambiguity, or potential sources of user error
  • Develop and maintain document templates, formatting standards, style guides, naming conventions, and documentation processes
  • Maintain revision history, document configuration control, traceability, and version management for program documentation
  • Support Government review and comment resolution by incorporating red lines, adjudicating comments with technical stakeholders, and maintaining documentation through final approval
  • Collaborate across engineering, product development, program management, quality, field support, cybersecurity, and other organizations to ensure documentation accurately reflects the delivered system
  • Gather feedback from Government customers, end users, engineers, and internal stakeholders and continuously improve documentation quality and usability
  • Support additional technical documentation, white papers, product documentation, and engineering reports as required
Job Qualifications & Experience

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Technical Communication, Technical Writing, English, Communications, Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related technical discipline
  • Associate's degree with relevant technical writing and Government program experience may be considered in lieu of a bachelor's degree
  • 3+ years of experience developing, editing, and maintaining technical or engineering documentation preferred
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Word, including advanced styles, templates, section management, tables, cross-references, automated numbering, captions, headers/footers, and large-document formatting
  • Demonstrated experience developing, editing, and maintaining complex technical documentation
  • Must have a United States security clearance or be able to obtain United States security clearance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting U.S. Government or Department of Defense contracts or programs
  • Experience developing or supporting CDRL deliverables and working with DD Form 1423s and Data Item Descriptions (DIDs)
  • Ability to interpret documentation requirements contained within contracts, Statements of Work (SOW), Performance Work Statements (PWS), specifications, DIDs, and other Government requirements
  • Familiarity with DoD technical documentation, engineering, acquisition, sustainment, and configuration management processes
  • Experience developing technical manuals, maintenance procedures, installation instructions, engineering reports, test documentation, system descriptions, or similar technical products

The base pay for this role can vary from $116,000 to $146,000 a year based on individual qualifications. Eligibility for yearly discretionary bonus. Persistent Systems, LLC offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance; paid time off (sick time and vacation time); flexible spending accounts; 401(k) plan with company match; fitness membership reimbursement; tuition assistance; mental health benefits; and pet discounts.
