JOB SUMMARY:
The Senior Writer, Resource Development is a strategic storyteller responsible for developing compelling, donor-centered communications that inspire transformational philanthropy in support of CARE's mission. As the lead writer supporting the Major & Principal Gifts team, this role creates high-impact proposals, stewardship reports, impact narratives, donor briefings, campaign materials, and executive communications that engage high-net-worth individuals, donor-advised funds, and family foundations.
Working closely with a highly skilled fundraisers, country offices, technical experts, marketing teams, and executive leadership, the Senior Writer translates complex humanitarian and development initiatives into persuasive, donor-focused narratives that strengthen relationships and secure significant philanthropic investment.
This role requires exceptional writing, editorial judgment, strategic thinking, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to synthesize complex information into clear, emotionally compelling, and donor-ready content. The ideal candidate has experience operating in a fast-paced environment, can balance multiple priorities, respond quickly during humanitarian emergencies, and consistently delivers work that reflects CARE's voice, values, and fundraising priorities.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lead Strategic Content Development for Major & Principal Gifts
The Sr Writer will lead the development of sophisticated proposals for Major Gifts, Principal Gifts, donor-advised funds, and family foundations for a wide range of CARE projects and programs advances annual fundraising goals. This includes:
  • Develop donor investment cases from concept through final submission (grants, unrestricted and restricted funding proposals, pooled fund, campaigns, and cross-sector investment opportunities.
  • Translate complex program strategies into compelling donor narratives that are easy to understand and bring a world view of key macro trends to influence narratives.
  • Partner with multiple relationship managers to tailor messaging to donor interests.
  • Collaborate with country offices and technical teams to identify funding opportunities and translate programmatic work into compelling donor content.
  • Ensure all materials reflect donor strategy, organizational priorities and brand standards.

Drive Executive and High Profile Donor Communications
The senior writer is also responsible for crafting other communications materials to support Major Gift and Principal Gift fundraising priorities. This includes:
  • Donor stewardship reports.
  • Write executive briefings for donor webinar briefings.
  • Serve as editor for Impact Magazine including development editorial content, layout, coordinating interviews and working on photography with marketing team.
  • Develop messaging for bi-annual donor campaigns focused on key priorities.
  • Support executive donor engagement with email development, video scripts and website updates.
  • Ensure consistency of voice across donor communications.

Content Management & Workflows
  • Support AI management workflows.
  • Produce emergency proposals and appeals under compressed timelines.
  • Develop rapid-response donor updates.
  • Support innovation in fundraising communications.
  • Strengthen writing capacity across country offices.
  • Contribute to knowledge management hub.
  • Attend collaborative team meetings.

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree (English/journalism)
- 8+ years of writing experience or equivalent
- Exceptional long-form and short-form writing ability
- Experience writing for sophisticated donor audiences
- Demonstrated success developing winning fundraising proposals
- Experience translating technical information into compelling narratives
- Excellent interviewing and storytelling skills
- Editorial leadership experience
- Experience managing multiple concurrent projects
- Strong stakeholder management skills
- Understanding of donor psychology
- Familiarity with AI-assisted writing tools while maintaining editorial quality
- Experience working across diverse global cultures

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in international NGOs
- Experience supporting campaigns exceeding $1M
- Experience working directly with executive leadership
- Experience writing for ultra-high-net-worth donors
- Knowledge of philanthropic trends
