Job description

Overview:

The Expert Risk Analyst will support, and report, to the Segment Risk Manager responsible for oversight of market risk. The Incumbent will have regular, direct interaction with senior members of the Treasury group and play a critical role in conducting effective challenge of Treasury activities relating to market risk, balance sheet or income statement forecast. They will serve as bank-wide or industry expert in key area(s) of treasury risk management. They will also provide mentoring, training and guidance to less experienced analysts and may lead/manage teams on a project basis, providing performance feedback to management as appropriate.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Senior individual contributor and group's subject matter expert on market risk related activities. Interact directly with Treasury team members to conduct effective challenge of Treasury risk pillars (market risk) through annual process assessments (PA) and periodic challenge reviews (CR).
  • Detailed knowledge of Asset Liability Management (ALM) concepts including interest rate risk modeling (net interest income and economic value of equity) and/or funds transfer pricing. Experience modeling interest rate risk measurements in QRM.
  • Detailed knowledge of plain-vanilla interest rate derivatives and underlying markets, pricing models, sensitivities, valuation methods and risk management measures.
  • Detailed understanding of bond math concepts such as effective duration, convexity, OAS.
  • Solid understanding of mathematical topics such as discounted cashflow valuation, historical VaR model construction and operation, statistics.
  • Accountable for multiple processes/programs and my provide input on department budget for vendor expenses.
  • Set tactical direction based on findings of PAs and CRs when regulatory or best-practice gaps exist, as uncovered through the PA and CR frameworks in support of department strategic direction.
  • Communicate findings to Treasury team members forming strategic relationships with department peers and senior leadership.
  • Set timelines, expectations, and negotiate across departments to drive process improvement initiatives to implement changes to methodology and enhance/streamline processes to improve efficiency and sustainability.
  • Provide leadership, guidance and direction to junior staff regarding all aspects of data analysis, risk reporting, risk identification, risk policies and governance and regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain and develop in others knowledge on standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the risk analytics field.
  • Build new financial challenger-type models or utilize existing ALM models to increase the efficiency of oversight activities.
  • Adhere to applicable compliance/operational risk controls in accordance with Company or regulatory standards and policies.
  • Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.
  • Promote an environment that supports belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand.

Scope of Responsibilities:

The Expert RiskAnalyst must be adept at working across all levels of the organization from junior staff to the Chief Risk Officer or other senior/executive members of management in Risk or Treasury/Finance. This is a high exposure position where the incumbent must be comfortable working with minimal/moderate oversight under tight deadlines. The incumbent serves as the expert on matters relating to treasury risk analysis.

Supervisory/Managerial Responsibilities:

Provide training and guidance to junior analysts and peers, and may lead/manage a small team.

Education and Experience Required:

Bachelor's degree in quantitative/analytical discipline (e.g., Finance, Accounting or Economics) and minimum of seven years' experience in a risk or business quantitative position including a minimum of two years' experience in interest rate, market and/or liquidity risk management

OR in lieu of degree,

A combined nine years' work experience and/or higher education with a minimum of seven years' relevant work experience.

Thorough knowledge of regulatory guidance on prudent interest rate, market and/or liquidity risk management including best practices and industry norms

Excellent verbal and written communication, cross-functional collaboration skills.

Ability to communicate concepts/theories and develop alternative recommendations.

Ability to make effective presentations to all levels of the organization.

Education and Experience Preferred:

Master's degree and/or CFA preferred.

Experience in treasury risk management, asset liability management or capital markets functions at a Category III or IV bank.
