Overview
The Instrument and Controls Designer is responsible for ensuring the Hexagon SmartPlant 3D environment for the Low Temperature and Cryogenic Storage Tank product line is populated with the correct instrumentation, hardware, etc. and that all the requisite attributes are entered such that the project deliverables related to the instrumentation discipline can be produced from the system.
The work includes among other things, development of block diagrams, support during precontract efforts, developing instrument layouts, junction box layouts, wiring diagrams, cable routing drawings, instrument installation details, instrument lists, material take-offs, etc. Over the course of time, capabilities in instrumentation must increase as knowledge of product line and deliverables improves and expectations expand for working independently with less supervision. The role reports to the Piping to Grade Manager and routinely interacts with other Discipline Engineers, Designers and Lead/Project Engineers.
Responsibilities
  • Read and understand Process and Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs)
  • Acquire a knowledge of the various instrument types used on Oil and Gas facilities
  • Gather supporting documents and information for assigned tasks
  • Read and understand the instrument related portions of the EPC contract
  • Review and understand supplier/manufacturer documentation
  • Populate the SmartPlant 3D environment with the requisite instrument information and use it to generate engineering deliverables
  • Coordinate with individuals from other disciplines and departments to ensure seamless technical compatibility and completion of engineering tasks safely, on-time, within budget and meeting all quality requirements

Qualifications
  • High School diploma with some college required.
  • Associates Degree or 2 year technical degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Typically 3 to 4 years' experience with design modelling, drafting and design
  • Proficient in current engineering design and drafting software (Autocad, Microstation)
  • Familiar with the Microsoft Office software suite
  • Has experience with 3D design using SmartPlant 3D
  • Familiarity with SPI database modules (Index, Specification, Process Data, Wiring, etc.) is beneficial but not required
  • Understanding of electrical equipment and materials installed in hazardous environments is beneficial
  • Background in programming ladder/relay logic and/or process control and instrumentation is a plus
  • Working knowledge of the chemical processing / oil & gas industries is highly desired
  • Working knowledge of industrial design including basic wiring and circuit design, electrical wiring troubleshooting, and industrial controls.
