This opportunity entails being responsible for observing contractor's work to monitor the projects compliance with contract documents and report findings. Coordinates and monitors the inspection efforts of inspection staff in their assigned areas of responsibilities on small to mid size projects to determine that Contractor's construction activities are monitored and controlled in accordance with design plans, specifications and contractual requirements. May provide guidance and training to inspection staff. Monitors contractor's construction progress as compared to overall project and contract schedule. Responsible for assisting in the compliance and modification of design calculations, technical reports, engineering plans, specifications, and other contract documents for assigned projects. Leverages technical knowledge to assist in the review and interpretation of construction drawings, specifications, and construction reports.
What You'll Do:
  • Inspects, monitors, and oversees construction field work tasks and activities on a project to ensure conformance to plans and specifications. Reads, interprets, and confirms compliance with applicable contract documents.
  • Performs or oversees on-site material testing. Reviews plans and specifications to determine material requirements (quantities and qualities). Responsible for tracking of item quantities and preparing pay estimates, and ensures that procedures and materials comply with plans and specifications.
  • Initiates field changes to drawings and specifications, identifies discrepancies or conflicts within the documents. Reviews contractor's daily construction reports for accuracy, thoroughness, and consistency. Responsible for maintaining as-constructed drawings and monitors contractors progress to analyze against progress schedule.
  • Consults with Resident Engineer on work progress and construction problems, proactively recommends solutions, assists in the resolution of issues, and acts as a liaison with the engineer of record.
  • Remains current and knowledgeable of industry technology and tools used to perform inspection work through industry resources, training, and research. Gains exposure to new technology and utilizes it (GPS/Rovers) to increase efficiency and accuracy of inspection tasks.
  • Performs office engineer work when needed including but not limited to; prepares documentation for change orders, reviews change order scope of work, schedule and cost, processes and maintains tracking logs for RFIs, submittals, pay estimates and other deliverables. Assists in constructability reviews.
  • Mentors and trains staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering and 4 years relevant experience, or
  • Master's degree in Engineering and 3 years relevant experience, or
  • Doctorate degree in Engineering and 2 years relevant experience.

What You'll Bring:
  • Identifies complex discrepancies or conflicts within documents and takes appropriate action to resolve issues.
  • Performs advanced calculations, develops plots and graphs using Excel, and drafts detailed reports for project progress reporting to the client.
  • Provides direction on projects to less experienced staff.
  • Performs advanced shop drawing and submittal review as well as advanced CPM schedule analysis.

What We Prefer:
  • Professional Engineer (PE), Certified Construction Manager (CCM), or American Concrete Institute (ACI.)
  • OSHA 30 certified preferred.
  • Agency safety training certified.
  • Trained in digital construction management software such as Constructware, Asite or similar preferred

The approximate pay range for Illinois is $91,710.82 - $143,445.15. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual's qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.
