Job description
The University of Southern Maine's Biology Department is seeking applicants for part-time instructors to for our 2026 - 2027 Academic Year.
We are seeking a student-focused instructor who will be responsible for the full delivery and grading of the course. Responsibilities include developing the course, teaching, assessing student performance, and meeting with students as needed. The instructor will be provided with the course learning objectives, program competencies, and suggested topical outline and will be given a previous course syllabus available for reference.
Courses to be taught may include but are not limited to:
Introduction to Marine Biology (BIO 103) - Selected groups of marine plants and animals are used to develop an understanding of biological processes and principles that are basic to all forms of life in the sea. Integrated in the course are aspects of taxonomy, evolution, ecology, behavior, and physiology.
Marine Biology Laboratory (BIO 104) - An examination of prototype organisms will be used to illustrate their varied roles in the ocean.
Genetics (BIO 201) - A study of the organization, transmission and expression of genes and genomes.
Microbiology Laboratory (BIO 282) - The laboratory explores basic techniques of isolation and cultivation of microorganisms, primarily bacteria and fungi. In addition, biochemical, molecular, and genetic analyses of microorganisms are introduced.
The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Southern Maine provides students with a strong foundation in the biological sciences through innovative teaching, hands-on laboratory experiences, and opportunities for undergraduate research. Faculty are dedicated to student success and engage learners in a collaborative environment that emphasizes scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and real-world application. With programs spanning molecular biology, ecology, environmental science, and health-related fields, the department prepares graduates for careers in research, healthcare, biotechnology, environmental conservation, and advanced study.
Part-time faculty members are paid on a credit hour basis based on prior teaching experience, as determined by the Part-Time Faculty Association of Maine (PATFA), an affiliate of the national American Federation of Teachers (AFT) union. In addition, The Center for Academic Innovation provides learning design consulting and faculty development opportunities to help faculty to create engaging programs, courses and lesson plans grounded in evidence-based best practices for every modality.
