Employer & Industry UsageTech firms, government agencies, environmental companiesUrban planning, environmental agencies, consulting firms

The Contract Geospatial Data Engineer focuses on building and maintaining GIS data systems, often requiring programming skills, while a GIS Analyst primarily analyzes spatial data and creates maps. Both roles are essential in GIS projects but differ in technical depth and responsibilities.

What is a contract geospatial data engineer?

Contract Geospatial Data Engineers are professionals who specialize in managing, analyzing, and visualizing spatial data on a temporary or project-based contract. They use geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, and data engineering tools to process location-based data for various industries such as urban planning, environmental science, or logistics. Unlike full-time employees, contract engineers typically work for a set duration or on specific projects, offering flexibility to employers and a variety of work for the engineer. Their expertise helps organizations make data-driven decisions based on spatial analysis.

What are some common challenges faced by contract geospatial data engineers when working with diverse datasets from multiple sources?

Contract Geospatial Data Engineers often encounter challenges related to data integration and quality control, as datasets can come in various formats, projections, and levels of accuracy. Ensuring compatibility and consistency across sources requires strong attention to detail and proficiency with geospatial tools such as GIS software and scripting languages. Additionally, contractors must quickly adapt to the unique workflows and expectations of different clients or teams, making effective communication and project management skills essential. These challenges are balanced by the opportunity to work on a variety of projects and expand expertise in different geospatial domains.

In this role, you will build scalable GIS tools and spatial workflows that enable teams to analyze coverage gaps, evaluate infrastructure needs, and guide investment and planning decisions. You will work closely with engineering, data, and program teams to ensure geospatial data and applications are reliable, accessible, and capable of supporting large-scale operational and strategic initiatives.

Key Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Develop, maintain, and update ArcGIS Online (AGOL) dashboards, map services, web layers, and reporting tools to support data visualization for coverage reinvestment activities

  • Manage, process, and analyze large ArcGIS datasets, including scripts, automation, and advanced geoprocessing tools, to import, export, and organize data while ensuring integrity, consistency, and adherence to geospatial data standards

  • Perform advanced geospatial analysis, including suitability modeling, geospatial overlays, multi-criteria assessments, and nationwide spatial evaluations, to identify optimal AOI candidate locations

  • Integrate crowdsourced datasets, RAN-derived inputs, and third-party GIS sources to generate insights that guide AOI identification, prioritization, and investment justification

  • Produce technically accurate maps, layers, models, and documentation packages, including attribute tables and dashboards, to support engineering, business, and investment decision-making

  • Develop, validate, and refine data processing workflows to solve complex geospatial data challenges, ensuring data integrity, repeatability, and auditability, including routine validation and quality checks on GIS datasets

  • Support development and maintenance of geospatial standards, quality controls, and version-controlled geodatabase structures consistent with client analytic expectations

  • Provide expert recommendations and hands-on geospatial workflow support, including model runs, data preparation, and version control, to program leadership, engineering SMEs, and investment teams

  • Maintain repository structures, file catalogs, and AGOL content, and support geospatial documentation needs (SOPs, workflow diagrams, supporting materials) for efficient retrieval and use across engineering, business, and program teams

  • Contribute to continuous improvement of the First Responder Impact Model (FRIM) and related spatial tools by validating assumptions, reviewing inputs, and identifying improvements to strengthen investment analytics

  • Carry out our Commitments to Deliver, Grow, and Thrive.

Location:
You will work as part of a remote team; however, you may be required to attend occasional meetings at headquarters located in: Washington, DC; Reston, VA; Arlington, VA or Boulder, CO.

Required Experience/Skills:

  • Experience establishing and maintaining various ArcGIS Online (AGOL) mapping & report dashboards

  • Experience in periodic importing and exporting of large ArcGIS datasets and associated information, including use of scripts and data management practices to support large-scale processing

  • Experience using ArcGIS Suitability Modelling on a nationwide basis to identify the best locations that are most likely to meet a specified goal

  • Experience using crowdsource data to produce useful insights in support of guiding investment activities

  • Demonstrated relevant knowledge and experience with a multi-state and/or national public safety communications program or project

  • Experience conducting spatial analysis related to network coverage, infrastructure, or telecommunications datasets

  • Strong data analysis and visualization skills, with the ability to present findings clearly

  • Experience preparing or supporting geospatial data for use in enterprise analytics or decision-support platforms

  • Demonstrated experience in problem solving when handling large datasets within ArcGIS
