What is a contract engineer?

Contract Engineers are professionals who manage and oversee contracts related to engineering projects. They are responsible for drafting, evaluating, negotiating, and executing contracts between companies and clients, vendors, or subcontractors. Their work ensures that all terms and requirements are clear, legal, and beneficial to all parties involved. Contract Engineers also help resolve disputes, monitor compliance, and manage project risks related to contractual obligations.

What does a contract engineer do?

As a contract engineer, you provide temporary support for a company that needs help. In this role, you may help design a product or structure, provide guidance to builders working off of your plans, or evaluate a company's existing system to be sure the proposed engineering plan matches their capabilities. Many aspects of this job depend on the type of engineering support a company needs. For example, some contract engineers focus heavily on the mechanical aspects of a project, while others help hire contractors, evaluate proposals, and answer questions related to the project.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, contract management, and project planning, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with contract management software, procurement systems, and industry-specific regulations or certifications such as PMP or NEC is often required. Strong negotiation, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you manage client expectations and resolve contract disputes. These abilities ensure contracts are delivered on time, within budget, and meet both technical and legal requirements.

What are some common challenges contract engineers face when managing multiple projects simultaneously?

Contract Engineers often juggle several projects at once, each with distinct timelines, client expectations, and compliance requirements. A common challenge is ensuring effective communication across all stakeholders while maintaining meticulous documentation and meeting strict deadlines. Balancing these responsibilities requires strong organizational skills and adaptability to shifting project priorities. Collaborating closely with legal, procurement, and technical teams is essential to resolve issues quickly and keep projects on track.

Assembly Process Engineer - Contract

Commonwealth Fusion Systems

Devens, MA

$45 - $62/hr

Contractor

Job description

About Commonwealth Fusion Systems:

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.

Combining decades of research, top talent, and new technologies, we're designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. And we're working with policymakers, suppliers, and many others to build the energy industry of the future.

We're in the best position to make it happen. Since 2018, we've raised $4 billion of capital, making us the largest and leading fusion company in the world.

Now we're looking for more thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us. People who'll bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team.

If that's you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.

Join the power movement as an Assembly Process Engineer - Contract

As a SPARC Assembly Process Engineer, you will help create, define, instruct, and assist in managing the process by which we assemble the SPARC tokamak device. This will include collaborating with the system design teams on the sequence and key steps, organizing and designating how the various sub-assemblies will come together to create the larger whole, identifying assembly methods and tools required, and then writing these steps into work instruction packets for use by the assembly technicians to use in the field. You will work closely and collaborate with the other SPARC teams to find the most efficient, creative, cost-effective, and safest way to assemble each part of the tokamak. You will guide and organize how the giant parts of this multi-million pound "Swiss-watch" come together! This work is conducted within a multi-disciplinary team of physicists and engineers as part of collaborative sponsored research projects at the MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center and within CFS.
What you'll do:
  • Develop plans and work instructions for the successful handling, manipulation, guidance, and general integration of complex, novel, and unique assemblies that make up the SPARC sub-systems
  • Assist a lead field engineer in finalizing the strategy for each assembly step - this requires collaboration with the system teams to find the optimum assembly steps, methods, strategies, safety measures, specifications, custom and off-the-shelf tooling, and other details
  • Develop a working knowledge of CFS ERP and MES systems and ensure that part traceability is integrated into the work instruction steps and throughout the part assembly process
  • Utilize problem solving ability and communication skills when non-conformances and challenges arise in the assembly process
  • Within the work instruction development, ensure tool and personnel access is available as required for system assembly steps
  • Be responsible for the plans of part movement at each step and checking that there are no interferences with other systems during movement and part placement
  • Be responsible for construction of the assembly work instruction packets for all SPARC sub-assemblies, and the incorporation of them into the assembly work orders to create the optimum assembly and testing sequence
  • Provide assistance in development and improvement of the work instruction packet and work order creation process to increase standardization, efficiency, safety, clarity, and overall good communication of the instructions for the success of the assembly process
  • Participate in collaborative work with the assembly engineers, tooling engineers, designers, coordinators, as well as direct personnel performing the Tokamak Assembly during on-site work
What we're looking for:
  • High School Diploma
  • At least 5 years technical experience in the integration of complex and large mechanical structures (e.g. aerospace, chemical) and experience in work instruction packet creation
  • Bachelor's or associate degree in a related field, metrology, high-vacuum projects and processes, experience with manufacturing management software, NX, large Component (>10 Ton) lifting experience
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Safety conscious and proactive
  • An ability to clearly express and critique ideas
  • An aptitude to use data to drive decisions
  • An emphasis on elegance and simplicity over complexity
  • The ability to thrive in fast-paced, dynamic environments
  • A drive toward commercially viable solutions
  • Values that align with our company's values of integrity, execution, impact, and self-critique
Must-have requirements:
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
  • Perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
$45 - $62 an hour
This is a contract position.
