About the Role
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Structural Drafter to support the planning, design, and development of Electric Substation Projects for utility clients. This position will be in St. Louis, MO, Raleigh, NC, or Remote.
Under general to minimal supervision, provides technical design and CADD support on electrical substation projects, producing designs and specifications for power and energy infrastructure. Tasks may include generating CADD designs for substation structural and civil-related components, including foundations, steel structures, equipment supports, and layouts, on assigned projects of basic complexity
This position focuses on system reliability improvements, new construction, and infrastructure upgrades while ensuring compliance with client standards, and utility engineering practices.
The ideal candidate will have experience in utility Electric Substation design, construction package development, and drafting/design software such as AutoCAD and MicroStation. Candidates with experience working for electric utilities or utility consulting firms are strongly encouraged to apply.
Key Responsibilities
  • Under general supervision, assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from physical work sites, surveys, structural concepts, vendor drawings, blueprints, schematics, technical drawings, rough sketches, diagrams, and written or verbal specifications to support substation structural drafting and design activities.
  • Under general supervision, use computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) software to assist with basic substation structural design details and prepare drawings which require a high degree of precision.
  • Provide basic technical design assistance that accounts for proper illustration, fit, form, and function for substation foundations, steel structures, and equipment supports, while ensuring designs comply with applicable design standards and specifications.
  • Assist with verifying drawing accuracy, dimensions, material quantities, design revisions, change orders, and interpretation of contract plans and specifications, escalating technical issues as appropriate.
  • Work with cross-functional teams, including structural, electrical, and civil disciplines, in executing substation project work.
  • Assure plans adhere to applicable city, state, and federal regulations, as well as client and industry standards.
  • Prepare multiple versions of substation structural designs for review by engineers.
  • Ensure the specification of dimensions, materials, and procedures for assigned substation projects, ensuring compliance with contract requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with the engineer-in-charge and other technical professionals on assigned project phases, segments, checks, and tasks.
  • Complete training in assigned drafting and design support tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to UtilliCo's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
  • Support drafting for substation projects, including foundations and structural steel detailing.
  • Develop and apply CAD skills while promoting adherence to drafting standards.
  • Learn and follow client standards, practices, and procedures to ensure deliverables meet expectations.
  • Comply with UtilliCo's standards, procedures, and processes.
  • Collaborate on design issues and seek guidance from senior team members as needed.

Required Qualifications
  • Associates degree in drafting (or equivalent technical degree).
  • Prior experience supporting substation, utility, or industrial infrastructure projects.
  • Prior experience in structural or civil drafting related to foundations, steel, or equipment supports.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant post education experience with prior substation structural or utility infrastructure drafting experience.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting substation structural drafting scope on utility or power infrastructure projects.
  • Familiar with drafting and design support principles, practices, processes, methods, and techniques.
  • Familiar with relevant codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, and comply with company policies.
  • Able to uphold workplace safety and ability to abide by UtilliCo's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Knowledge of industry standard concrete, rebar, and structural steel detailing practices
  • Required to have AutoCAD 3D experience
  • 3 years minimum of applicable drafting experience with AutoCAD
  • Proficiency in CAD software such as AutoCAD 2020 experience, REVIT is a plus, or similar tools
  • Familiarity with BIM (Building Information Modeling) processes
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles and construction methods
  • Experience in structural drafting or related roles

  • Formal structural drafting coursework with the ability to produce shop drawings
  • Able to produce Steel and Foundation Plans, Sections and Elevation Views
  • Experience with the Preparation of Bill of Materials

  • Knowledge of building codes and regulations
  • Authorization to work in the United States without the need for employer-sponsored visa sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Experience with BlueBeam software
  • Familiarity with computer-aided drafting software, such as AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
  • Capable of producing Steel and Foundation Plans, section and elevation views, assembling shop drawings, and preparing structural bills of materials.

  • Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to technical and non-technical audiences.
