Job description

Title: Project Geologist – Gunnison Project
Reports to: Chief Geologist
Location: JCM Mine site and Casa Grande AZ
The Project Geologist is responsible for leading the execution and continuous improvement of all drilling programs that support resource growth, metallurgical studies, geotechnical investigations, and exploration for the Gunnison Project. The role provides technical oversight of multiple contract drilling companies, tracks drilling costs, monitors contractor performance, and supervises and develops geologists and geological technicians.
Reporting to the Chief Geologist, the Project Geologist will coordinate and collaborate with contractors including drilling companies, geo techs, specialty surveyors, etc. over the drilling season and will work closely with Mine Engineering, Metallurgy, Technical Services, Resource Geology, and Operations at the Johnson Camp Mine site to ensure drilling programs and studies are executed safely, on time, and on budget to deliver high-quality geological information that supports project advancement and mine planning. This is a field-based position with frequent required visits to drilling sites, and the core shed.
Responsibilities:
  • Execute infill, exploration, metallurgical, geotechnical, condemnation, and other drilling programs.
  • Make real-time decisions regarding hole extensions or termination based on geological observations.
  • Help secure contracts, review invoices, and track drilling-related costs, productivity, and safety performance.
  • Interpret geological, structural, alteration, mineralogical, and geochemical data to recommend follow-up drilling.
  • Monitor mobilization, environmental compliance, de-mobilization and reclamation work conducted by contracted companies.
  • Ensure consistent, accurate geological and geotechnical logging standards across geologists.
  • Ensure the team follows sampling QA/QC procedures, reviews laboratory performance, and maintains chain-of-custody.
  • Lead by example, supervising and mentoring geologists, technicians, and temporary staff.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure the success of drilling programs and support technical studies.
  • Generate weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports on drilling productivity, technical information, and team performance.
  • Ensure Core, Pulps, Sample Rejects, and other materials are stored appropriately and that inventory remains up to date.
  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement, abiding by Excelsior safety protocols.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum B.S. in Geology or Geological Engineering with 10 years of progressively responsible experience.
  • Demonstrated experience managing contractors and the geology team during large-scale, fast-paced drilling campaigns.
  • Experience supervising and developing team members.
  • Ability to read and interpret geological logs, cross sections, and level plans.
  • Strong organizational skills and diligent record-keeping.
  • Computer competency and experience with geological database software, such as acQuire, are a plus.
  • Experience working on a drill site and logging drill cuttings or core is preferred.
  • Knowledge of ore deposits and Arizona geology is preferred.
