What is a contract copywriter?

A Contract Copywriter is a freelance or temporary writer hired to produce marketing, advertising, or editorial content for businesses. They create copy for websites, emails, ads, social media, and other materials to engage audiences and drive action. Unlike full-time employees, contract copywriters typically work on a project or short-term basis. They may collaborate with clients directly or through agencies, often managing multiple projects at once.

What does a contract copywriter do?

A typical workday for a Contract Copywriter often involves researching industry-specific topics, drafting and editing copy for various platforms such as websites, emails, or marketing materials, and communicating with clients or project managers to clarify project objectives. You may juggle multiple assignments from different clients, each with its own set of deadlines and content guidelines. Many contract copywriters work remotely and set their own schedules, allowing flexibility, but also requiring strong organizational skills to ensure timely delivery. Collaboration can happen via email, video calls, or project management tools, especially when coordinating with designers or marketing teams. This variety keeps the role dynamic and offers the chance to expand your portfolio with diverse writing projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract copywriter?

To thrive as a Contract Copywriter, you need exceptional writing and editing skills, a strong command of grammar, and the ability to adapt your tone and style to various audiences, often supported by a bachelor's degree in English, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems, SEO tools, and project management platforms is often required to produce optimized and well-structured content. Strong time-management, communication, and self-motivation are vital soft skills, as contract roles typically require balancing multiple clients and meeting tight deadlines independently. These abilities ensure high-quality deliverables, on-time project completion, and successful client relationships in a flexible, often remote work environment.

Job description

Skylight is a technology startup building the OS of the family. We make Skylight Calendar, the smart calendar loved by millions of families (plus Wired and the Wirecutter). Our latest product is Calendar 2, which just launched to rave reviews.

Our mission is to connect loved ones by creating the world's simplest products and services that improve family life. Our founders are former venture capitalists and serial entrepreneurs who have scaled this business to $300M+ in annual revenue while being completely bootstrapped and profitable. We get to grow a happy, healthy company focused on making products our customers love without investors breathing down our necks.

We're seeking a senior-level contract copywriter to help us during our Q4 season. This role will support senior staff in creating important growth creative work, with a focus on e-mail and paid social. The ideal candidate is a self-starter that is organized and agile, with a strong background in performance creative -- and has a portfolio to demonstrate those skills.

A portfolio of work is required for consideration for this role.

Responsibilities:
  • Working with senior staff, including Principal Copywriter and Senior Graphic Designers to autonomously execute e-mail and paid social creative, as well as other ad-hoc channels where marketing needs require it.
  • Collaborating with channel partners to test and iterate on ideas quickly, leveraging data and insights to inform creative decision-making.
  • Adhering to Skylight's style guide and tone of voice to create marketing materials that adhere to brand identity.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years of experience
  • Experience in Figma, or similar design systems
  • Background in writing for e-mail and paid social creative, with a portfolio to demonstrate those skills
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Highly collaborative, a self‑starter, and low ego
Nice to Have:
  • Experience with online retail marketing
  • Experience writing copy that serves our demographic: parents of younger children
  • Experience working on paid social in a high-growth company or agency environment
Hours & Pay:
  • Hours: 20 hours with up to 40 hours through the end of Q4.
  • Pay: $50-$70/hr
