Job description

Estimator

Role

The position of an Estimator is responsible for analyzing customer blueprints, CAD files, and specifications to develop accurate and competitive cost estimates. The Estimator ensures quotes reflect realistic machining processes, material costs, outside services, and labor requirements while supporting sales, production, engineering, and management teams. This role is critical to maintaining profitability, workflow efficiency, and strong customer relationships in a fast-paced, custom manufacturing setting.

Responsibilities

  • Review and interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, and specifications
  • Analyze machining requirements, including setups, tooling, tolerances, and cycle times
  • Calculate material, labor, and machine-hour costs for CNC milling, turning, fabrication, and assemblies
  • Obtain quotes from vendors for raw materials, hardware, tooling, and outside processes
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates and formal customer quotations
  • Enter and maintain quote details (materials, routing steps, pricing, lead times) in the ERP system
  • Track quote status and follow up with customers to support new business opportunities
  • Maintain accurate records of estimates, revisions, and historical job costing
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with production, programming, quality, and management to determine manufacturability
  • Participate in handoff meetings to ensure smooth transition from quoting to production
  • Evaluate opportunities for cost reduction or value-engineering solutions
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance quoting accuracy and speed

Expectations

The Estimator is expected to provide timely, accurate, and well-supported quotes that reflect both production capability and market-competitive pricing. The role involves rapid evaluation of customer requests, proactive communication with internal teams and vendors, and clear documentation inside the ERP system. The Estimator must help prevent production bottlenecks by identifying manufacturability concerns early, support profitable decision-making, and contribute to monthly sales and margin goals. Strong attention to detail, technical comprehension, and responsiveness are essential.
