Job description

Job Title: Senior Electrical CAD Designer
Location: Trussville, Alabama
Department: Engineering / Design

Lead Design Across Critical Utility Systems

We’re seeking a Senior Electrical CAD Designer to join our Trussville, Alabama team and take a key role supporting both our electric utility and water/wastewater utility projects. You’ll lead the development of detailed CAD drawing packages for control panels, RTU panels, and related systems that support critical infrastructure across the Southeastern United States.

This position is ideal for an experienced designer who thrives on complex projects, enjoys close collaboration with engineers, and takes pride in producing accurate, build-ready drawings that field teams and customers can trust.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the creation and modification of electrical design packages for substation, water, and wastewater control and RTU panels.
  • Develop and check one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, schematics, panel layouts, and network drawings.
  • Use AutoCAD and MicroStation to produce and review high-quality design documents and as-built updates.
  • Collaborate with engineers and project managers to define design standards, incorporate markups, and resolve technical issues.
  • Oversee drawing organization, revision control, and CAD standards across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior designers and drafters.
  • Support multi-discipline coordination for control, instrumentation, and SCADA/RTU wiring in both electric and water/wastewater facilities.
  • Help drive continuous improvement in drafting practices, templates, and workflows.

What You Bring

  • Experience: 10–15+ years of electrical CAD design experience in utility, industrial, or power system environments.
  • Software Proficiency: Advanced skills in AutoCAD and MicroStation, including layer management, xrefs, and sheet set organization.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Deep understanding of electrical control panel design, wiring practices, and schematic development.
    • Experience supporting substation, RTU, PLC, or water/wastewater control system projects.
    • Strong ability to interpret engineering intent and translate it into clear, constructible drawings.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Highly organized, detail-focused, and comfortable leading design efforts on complex projects.
    • Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset when working with engineers, project managers, and field personnel.
    • Proven ability to mentor others and uphold consistent design and CAD standards.

Why You’ll Love Working in Trussville

From our Trussville office, you’ll enjoy small-town convenience with quick access to the broader Birmingham metro area, giving you plenty of options for life outside of work.

  • Get outside: Explore local parks and nature trails around Trussville, or head to regional favorites like Red Mountain Park with 11 miles of hiking and biking trails and zip lines, or Oak Mountain State Park, known for its “Epic Ride” mountain bike trail.
  • Nearby adventures: Take day trips to Cheaha State Park, Alabama’s highest point, for big views and mountain hikes.
  • City energy: Enjoy Birmingham’s food scene, live music, and cultural experiences, including the Birmingham Civil Rights District, Vulcan Park, and the Birmingham Museum of Art.
  • Community & lifestyle: Trussville offers parks, recreation programs, and community events throughout the year, along with an affordable cost of living and a welcoming small-town feel.

If you’re a seasoned CAD professional ready to lead design work that directly supports essential utility services, we’d like to talk with you.

Apply today and help lead the design of systems that keep the Southeast energized and flowing.
