What is a contract backend developer?

Contract backend developers are professionals hired on a temporary or project basis to build and maintain the server-side logic, databases, and APIs that power web or mobile applications. They work behind the scenes to ensure that applications function smoothly, handle data efficiently, and communicate effectively with front-end systems. Unlike full-time employees, contract backend developers typically work for a set duration or on specific projects, offering flexibility to both clients and developers. They often bring specialized expertise in programming languages such as Python, Java, Node.js, or Ruby, and may work remotely or on-site depending on the contract terms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract backend developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Backend Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Python, Java, or Node.js, along with experience in database management and API development, supported by a relevant degree or proven project experience. Familiarity with frameworks (such as Django, Spring, or Express), cloud services (like AWS or Azure), and version control systems (e.g., Git) is typically expected. Excellent problem-solving abilities, strong communication, and the ability to quickly adapt to new codebases and team environments set top contractors apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering reliable, scalable backend solutions and integrating smoothly into diverse project teams.

What are some common challenges faced by contract backend developers when joining a new project?

Contract Backend Developers often encounter challenges such as quickly understanding existing codebases, adapting to different tech stacks, and aligning with the team's development practices. Since contract roles usually have tight deadlines, developers must rapidly familiarize themselves with project documentation and workflows. Effective communication with team members and proactive clarification of requirements are essential to ensure smooth integration and successful project outcomes.

Job Description
Job Description
At Mission Pet Health, our passion for pets and their families fuels our ambition to build the world's greatest veterinary organization. We are scaling toward 1,000 hospitals and 20,000+ teammates, and the data behind that growth runs across hundreds of clinical, financial, HR, and marketing systems. We're hiring a Solutions Architect to own the end-to-end design of the platform that ties it all together - and to stay hands-on while doing it. This is a hybrid opening in Birmingham, AL.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Own the target-state architecture for the data platform end-to-end - ingestion, storage, modeling, serving, and governance.
  • Set the direction for our analytical layer on SQL Server, SSAS, and ClickHouse, and for our integration fabric across Azure Data Factory, REST APIs, NATS, and CDC.
  • Design and operate event-driven, service-oriented workloads on Kubernetes in Go and Python.
  • Make AI-driven development a core focus of the team: build and adopt agentic tooling (code-aware agents, retrieval over our own schemas and lineage) so engineers ship faster, with better tests and documentation, and so routine work gets automated rather than repeated.
  • Define the data contracts, schema standards, and quality SLAs that engineering and analytics teams build against.
  • Embed PII/PHI handling, access control, and auditability into the platform
  • Mentor engineers, lead design reviews, and translate executive intent into delivery roadmaps.

Responsibilities and Benefits
Responsibilities and Benefits
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
  • 8+ years across data engineering, software engineering, or platform architecture
  • Deep hands-on experience with T-SQL, SQL Server at scale, SSAS, and Azure Data Factory.
  • Production experience with ClickHouse (or a comparable columnar engine such as Snowflake, BigQuery, or Databricks).
  • Strong production-grade skills in Python, Go, or a comparable backend language - and the discipline to write the code, not just the diagrams.
  • Comfort designing event-driven systems (REST, NATS or Kafka, CDC) and operating workloads on Kubernetes.
  • Genuine fluency with AI-assisted engineering - coding agents, LLM tooling, retrieval, evals - and a point of view on how to do it responsibly inside a regulated, multi-site business.
  • A track record of partnering with executives and turning ambiguous business problems into durable technical designs.
  • Reside in or be willing to relocate to Birmingham, Alabama and work onsite.

NICE TO HAVE
  • Veterinary, healthcare, or multi-site retail/services experience, particularly with Practice Information Management Systems (PIMS).
