What is a contract attorney?

A contract attorney conducts research, prepares legal documents, and represents clients in a court of law. Contract attorneys are not permanent employees of law firms; they handle cases on behalf of law firms on a case-by-case basis. Much like standard attorneys, contract attorneys may specialize in a specific legal area, such as corporate law, family law, or criminal law. Law firms expect contract attorneys to uphold the same legal standards as traditional attorneys.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract attorney?

To thrive as a Contract Attorney, you need a solid understanding of contract law, strong legal research abilities, and a Juris Doctor (JD) degree with bar admission. Proficiency with legal research databases such as Westlaw or LexisNexis, and familiarity with document management systems, are typically required. Exceptional attention to detail, negotiation skills, and clear written and verbal communication distinguish top performers in this field. These skills are crucial for drafting, reviewing, and interpreting complex contracts while protecting clients' interests and minimizing legal risks.

What are the typical challenges a contract attorney faces when managing multiple clients or cases simultaneously?

Contract Attorneys often juggle several assignments from various clients or law firms, which can present challenges in time management, prioritization, and maintaining clear communication. Each client may have different expectations, document management systems, and deadlines, making it essential to stay organized and proactive in scheduling. Developing strong project management skills and using legal technology tools can help Contract Attorneys efficiently track tasks, ensure confidentiality, and meet deliverables across diverse projects.

Job description

Heston Law Firm is seeking a contract attorneys for local counsel. We are seeking attorneys to cover hearings primarily in the Houston area, with additional coverage needed across multiple Texas counties, including but not limited to Brazoria, Dallas, Williamson, El Paso, Montgomery, and Galveston. Applicants will attend court hearings on an as-needed basis.

We are a Texas debt lawyer representing individuals being sued for unpaid debts, with a 98% success rate of cases being dismissed or the amount reduced. Founded by attorney James Heston, our firm has been providing legal services to Texans for many years. We are a relatively high-volume law firm with 3000-4000 open cases at any one time, and an average of 80- 100+ hearings scheduled per week throughout several counties in the state of Texas.

As a contract attorney, you will attend court hearings on an as-needed basis. We handle all the case details and client communication, so you won’t be the attorney of record or expected to communicate with clients or opposing counsel outside the hearing. We provide all the necessary documents and details through our simple online portal. This allows you to attend the hearing, submit your results, and leave the courthouse with no follow-up work to do.

Requirements for Local Counsel:

  • Must be licensed attorneys admitted to practice in Texas courts
  • Must be in good standing.
  • Fluency in Spanish is preferred, but not required.

Benefits:

  • Weekly direct deposit
  • Up to $125 per appearance
  • Flexible schedule

Attorneys are needed for both in-person hearings and Zoom hearings. In-person hearings are compensated at a higher rate than Zoom hearings, and you can attend Zoom hearings in any Texas county of your choice. We also pay a “late cancellation” fee when a hearing gets cancelled one business day or less before the scheduled hearing time. When this happens, you do not need to attend the hearing, but you still get paid the “late cancellation” fee.

If you would like to apply or learn more, you can submit the application form directly through the link provided and we will get in touch with you as soon as possible, https://www.hestonlawfirm.com/local-counsel/

Company Description
