Job description

Job Summary:
The Packaging Technician is responsible for operating various packaging equipment and assembling packaging materials, ensuring the proper handling and labeling of manufactured goods, and maintaining a safe, clean, and efficient workspace. The role involves adjusting machinery based on product specifications, performing inspections, and ensuring the safety and quality of packaged products before shipment.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Operate packaging equipment such as sealers, box formers, label dispensers, and blister pack machines.
  • Assemble packaging materials including corrugated boxes, plastic containers, tubes, drums, bags, and more.
  • Adjust machinery according to product specifications and sizes.
  • Perform routine inspections of empty packaging materials before use.
  • Carefully pack manufactured goods into appropriate containers for safe shipment.
  • Accurately label packaging with necessary information, including contents, quantities, shipping codes, expiration dates, and fragility warnings.
  • Use protective inserts (e.g., foam, air bags, Styrofoam pellets) to safeguard contents.
  • Perform final inspections of sealed packages before shipment approval.
  • Evaluate and assess damaged or rejected packaging materials and determine causes.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations while operating machinery.
  • Maintain an organized, clean, and efficient workspace.
  • Secure palletized loads with shrink wrap or protective strapping.
  • Complete logs/documentation regarding packaging tasks and inventory management.
  • Install product guides, funnels, stops, and other adjustable components to improve packaging.
  • Effectively communicate specifications, issues, and updates with colleagues.
  • Prepare packaged orders for pickup/delivery according to the established schedule.
  • Utilize hand tools (box cutters, scissors, heat guns) for specialized sealing and closing.
  • Report any malfunctions or unsafe conditions of packaging equipment immediately.
  • Properly align packaged containers on conveyor belts for automatic wrapping.
  • Reconcile packaged products with production logs and update records accordingly.
  • Set up, test, and adjust new packaging machinery or processes.
  • Provide guidance and training to other packaging technicians or helpers.
  • Maintain cleanliness/sanitation standards in the packaging area and report issues.
  • Recommend solutions to improve safety, reduce waste, and enhance efficiency.
  • Actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives and cost-reduction efforts

Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Proficient in operating packaging machinery and equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail for inspecting and labeling products.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
  • Good communication skills to collaborate with colleagues and report issues.
  • Basic understanding of health and safety regulations.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining safety standards.
  • Skilled in using hand tools and packaging materials.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and report equipment malfunctions.
  • Capable of identifying and addressing efficiency and safety concerns.

Education/Experience:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous experience in packaging or manufacturing environments preferred.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and to stand for long periods.
  • Dexterity to handle small components and operate hand tools.
  • Ability to bend, squat, and reach for packaging materials or machinery adjustments.
  • Ability to work in an environment with varying temperatures, noise levels, and other industrial conditions.
