Description
The Department of Parks and Recreations is seeking to hire a student assistant under the Relevancy & History Program which provides a dynamic, hands-on experience in the Interpretation and Education department. The student assistant will contribute directly to social media content development and posts, special event planning, development and execution, and overall support of the Relevancy & History project, including historical research and interpretation.
The student assistant is expected to manage their own project(s) with support and periodic check-ins from park staff. Throughout the internship, training will be provided in storytelling, interpretive techniques, historical research, and special event planning and execution.
Reporting Location: Sonoma State Park.

Employment
This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

Prerequisites
Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring and Winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list. Students must be enrolled in at least: six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.
Students declared major must match the major(s) listed in the job posting.
Majors/Fields of Study
Parks and Recreation Management, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, Digital Media, Graphic Design, Communications, History, Public History, Museum Studies, Event Management, Education, or a closely related field.
Work Schedule
Flexible workdays and work hours, Monday - Friday, between 8 AM - 5 PM. The final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor. The internship is based on-site at the Sonoma State Historic Park, Sonoma Barracks. Hours and duration can be adjusted to align with academic schedules or credit requirements.
Additional Work Schedule
Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday - Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).
Compensation
$17.00 per hour.
Minimum Qualifications
- Strong interest in public history, education, or cultural interpretation.
- Ability to work independently and manage deadlines.
- Strong written communication and research skills.
- Willingness to receive and incorporate feedback.
- Professional demeanor in all tasks and communications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with digital and social media, public relations, historical research, and special event management.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Completion of at least five (5) engaging social media posts related to the Relevancy & History Program.
- Participation in at least 1 special event during the semester.
- Skill development in special event planning, execution and overall process.
- 10-15-minute capstone video presentation summarizing your work and experience.
- Skill development in storytelling, interpretation, and public history methods.
- Other duties as assigned in accordance with the mission of State Parks.
Physical Requirements
Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a hybrid environment and with 5% field work.
Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and uneven terrain. May require occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, or climbing as part of field duties.
Students/Employees will be required to work according to the current UEI remote workplace policy and sign a UEI Work from Home Agreement. The decision to permit an employee to work from home is at the discretion of the supervisor or employer and may, at any time and with or without cause, unilaterally terminate the option to work from home.
