Position Purpose
USL is seeking a strategic, creative and collaborative Director of Contentto lead the league's editorial vision and content strategy across every owned platform.
This role is responsible for shaping how the USL tells its story; developing the editorial strategy that brings the league's biggest moments, clubs, players and communities to life while supporting audience growth, brand development and business objectives.
The Director of Content leads the development and execution of the league's content strategy, aligning editorial, social media and multimedia storytelling around a shared editorial vision. This leader will work collaboratively across Marketing, Communications, Creative Services, Broadcast & Media, and Corporate Partnerships to identify the stories that matter most, shape how they are told and collaborate with teams across the organization to deliver them to the right audiences across every platform.
Working across the USL's men's, women's professional, pre-professional, and youth leagues the Director of Content will establish the editorial vision, content priorities and publishing strategy for the organization while empowering a team of writers, producers and social media professionals to execute that vision.
The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker, accomplished storyteller and collaborative leader who thrives in the fast-paced environment of live sports, combining editorial judgment, creative leadership and data-driven decision-making to maximize the impact of every piece of content.
Duties and Responsibilities
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
Content Strategy & Leadership
  • Develop and execute the USL's content strategy across editorial, social media, video, web and emerging platforms.
  • Establish the editorial vision, content priorities and publishing strategy that support the USL brand and business objectives.
  • Lead and mentor the league's editorial, social media and multimedia teams, aligning content creators around a shared editorial vision.
  • Oversee the planning, production and distribution of written, video and social content across all USL-owned platforms.
  • Lead editorial planning around league initiatives, competitions and major announcements.
  • Identify and develop compelling stories, recurring content and original programming that strengthens fan engagement and audience growth.
  • Ensure content is optimized for each platform while maintaining a consistent brand voice.
  • Cultivate relationships with social media and digital platform partners to identify new opportunities, stay ahead of emerging trends and maximize content distribution.
  • Establish workflows, editorial standards and publishing processes that enable high-quality storytelling across all platforms.
  • Develop integrated content plans in collaboration with Marketing, Communications, Broadcast & Media, Corporate Partnerships and Creative Services.
  • Build strong relationships with club content teams to align storytelling and support league-wide campaigns.
  • Manage department budgets, production calendars, external creators, agencies and production partners as needed.

Audience Growth & Insights
  • Develop content strategies that grow audiences, deepen fan engagement and strengthen the USL brand.
  • Use audience insights, analytics and industry trends to continually refine content strategy and improve performance.
  • Establish content KPIs and regularly report on audience growth, engagement and performance, providing insights that inform strategic decision-making.
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Digital Media or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in content strategy, editorial, digital media, social media or sports content production.
  • Proven success leading content teams and developing strategies that grow audiences, increase engagement and strengthen a brand.
  • Experience leading content teams and managing creative professionals, including writers, producers, editors and social media professionals is required.
  • Experience covering live sports, entertainment or other real-time events requiring strong editorial judgment and rapid decision-making.
  • Exceptional storytelling, writing and editing skills across multiple formats and platforms.
  • Deep understanding of social media platforms, digital publishing, video content and audience development strategies.
  • Comfortable using audience insights, analytics and performance data to inform content decisions.
  • Collaborative leader who communicates effectively across departments and builds strong relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Highly organized, thrives in a fast-paced environment and manages multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
  • Experience developing and executing successful content or social media campaigns.
  • A portfolio or body of work that demonstrates high-quality content, storytelling and creative execution is preferred.
  • Passion for soccer and an understanding of the North American soccer landscape.
  • Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish are a plus.
  • Positive attitude, strong work ethic and a willingness to roll up your sleeves when needed.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with team members, executives, member clubs, and external partners.
  • Ability to work independently in a multi-faceted, fast, fluid, and deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to work as business needs require which may include long days, evenings, weekends, occasional holidays, and travel if / when necessary.
  • Must have U.S. work authorization.

Work Environment
Based in Tampa, FL, USL Headquarters provides a vibrant and open working environment designed to promote collaboration, the exchange of ideas, and knowledge sharing. We believe in fostering a culture that encourages creativity, communication, and teamwork.
Currently, USL HQ operates on a hybrid work model. From Monday to Thursday, team members gather in person to harness the power of face-to-face collaboration. This not only strengthens the bonds within the team but also enhances communication and innovation. On Fridays, we transition to a remote work setup, providing our team with the flexibility to manage their tasks in an environment of their choosing.
Typical USL HQ hours are Monday - Friday 8:30am - 5:30pm ET. Evenings, weekends, occasional holidays, and travel may be necessary based on business demands.
