What is a container ship security job?

Container ship security jobs involve protecting cargo vessels, their crew, and goods from threats such as piracy, theft, terrorism, and unauthorized access while at sea or in port. Security personnel may be responsible for monitoring ship access points, conducting security patrols, implementing safety protocols, and coordinating with port authorities. These roles are crucial for ensuring the safe transport of valuable goods across international waters and often require specialized training in maritime security procedures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a container ship security officer?

To excel as a Container Ship Security Officer, you need a solid understanding of maritime security regulations, risk assessment, and emergency response procedures, often supported by certifications like the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code. Familiarity with surveillance systems, access control tools, and incident reporting software is typically required. Strong observational skills, decisive problem-solving, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for preventing and responding to threats. These competencies ensure the safety of crew, cargo, and vessel operations in compliance with international maritime security standards.

What are some common challenges faced when working in container ship security, and how can they be managed effectively?

Professionals in container ship security often encounter challenges such as monitoring large, complex cargo areas, coordinating with multinational crews, and responding quickly to potential security breaches or stowaways. Effective management involves strong communication skills, thorough knowledge of international maritime security regulations (like the ISPS Code), and regular security drills. Building good working relationships with port authorities and maintaining up-to-date training helps ensure prompt and coordinated responses to incidents.

What is the difference between Container Ship Security vs Cargo Security Officer?

Container Ship Security professionals focus on safeguarding ships and ports from piracy and unauthorized access, often working onboard vessels or at port facilities. Cargo Security Officers concentrate on protecting cargo from theft or damage during storage and transport, typically working in ports or warehouses. Both roles require security certifications and are vital in the maritime and logistics industries, but their work environments and specific duties differ.

Job description

About Hebbia

The AI platform for investors and bankers that generates alpha and drives upside. Founded in 2020 by George Sivulka and backed by Peter Thiel and Andreessen Horowitz, Hebbia powers investment decisions for BlackRock, KKR, Carlyle, Centerview, and 40% of the world's largest asset managers. Our flagship product, Matrix, delivers industry-leading accuracy, speed, and transparency in AI-driven analysis. It is trusted to help manage over $30 trillion in assets globally. We deliver the intelligence that gives finance professionals a definitive edge. Our AI uncovers signals no human could see, surfaces hidden opportunities, and accelerates decisions with unmatched speed and conviction. We do not just streamline workflows. We transform how capital is deployed, how risk is managed, and how value is created across markets. Hebbia is not a tool. Hebbia is the competitive advantage that drives performance, alpha, and market leadership.

The Role

We are looking for an infrastructure engineer who treats cloud infrastructure as a software problem. You will own Hebbia's AWS footprint end-to-end โ€“ accounts, networking, container orchestration, and everything defined in code โ€“ and the developer platform that our engineering teams build on top of it. Infrastructure-as-code is the core craft here: if it is provisioned by hand, it is not done. This is a build role, not a support role. You will spend your time designing multi-account architecture, writing the IaC and automation that makes environments reproducible, driving down cloud spend, hardening our infrastructure for enterprise and financial-services scrutiny, and making the path from a developer's laptop to production fast and boring. Your remit is the foundation itself: the infrastructure and platform that every engineer at Hebbia builds, tests, and ships on.

Responsibilities
  • Own Hebbia's AWS footprint: multi-account architecture, networking, IAM, and the container orchestration layer our services run on
  • Define all infrastructure as code, with the same review, testing, and versioning standards we hold application code to
  • Own cloud cost and capacity: model growth, right-size infrastructure, and write the automation that prevents over-provisioning before it shows up on the bill
  • Build and own the developer platform โ€” build pipelines, ephemeral and preview environments, and development tooling that every engineer at Hebbia depends on
  • Continuously improve CI/CD so teams ship quickly and safely, and treat build times and pipeline throughput as products with owners and metrics
  • Harden our infrastructure for the security and compliance bar our financial-services customers hold us to: threat modeling, least-privilege access, secrets management, and automated compliance and audit tooling
  • Architect for scale readiness โ€” multi-region capability, network and account isolation, and the growth headroom enterprise deployments demand
  • Partner with product engineering as a peer engineer, co-designing infrastructure alongside the systems that run on it
  • Evaluate and integrate new infrastructure technology where it measurably improves scalability, security, or engineering velocity
Who You Are
  • 5+ years building and operating cloud infrastructure at a venture-backed startup or top technology firm
  • Deep expertise with infrastructure-as-code tooling, and a track record of managing a real production estate entirely in code
  • Cloud platform fluency, with production depth in AWS (we are an AWS shop) โ€“ networking, IAM, and account architecture, not just compute
  • Strong command of containerization and orchestration technologies
  • Production-grade proficiency in at least one scripting or backend language for automation and internal tooling: Python, Go, or similar
  • Strong CI/CD pipeline expertise and a demonstrated record of improving developer velocity without sacrificing safety
  • Working knowledge of OS-level and networking concepts, and the ability to debug problems that span the boundary between infrastructure and application
  • Experience instrumenting infrastructure with monitoring and observability tooling, and surfacing the signals engineering teams need to understand platform health and cost
  • Handsโ€‘on experience securing cloud infrastructure to an enterprise compliance bar: least-privilege IAM, secrets management, hardening, and audit readiness
  • Experience managing cloud cost at scale, or building the tooling and guardrails that keep spend predictable, is a strong plus
Compensation

The salary range for this role is $160,000 to $300,000. This range may be inclusive of several career levels at Hebbia and will be narrowed during the interview process based on the candidate's experience and qualifications. Adjustments outside of this range may be considered for candidates whose qualifications significantly differ from those outlined in the job description.

Life @ Hebbia
  • PTO: Unlimited
  • Insurance: Medical + Dental + Vision + 401K
  • Eats: Catered lunch daily + DoorDash dinner credit if you ever need to stay late
  • Parental leave policy: 3 months non-birthing parent, 4 months for birthing parent
  • Fertility benefits: $15K lifetime benefit
  • New hire equity grant: competitive equity package with unmatched upside potential
