Job Overview
The Fire Alarm System Mechanic inspects, tests, maintains, and repairs installed fire alarm detention and suppression systems in accordance with manufacturer's specifications and National Fire Protection Association standards, inspects fire alarm equipment visually and replaces defective components, tests initiating and signal circuits, detectors, and system transmitter, makes needed repairs, and checks pressure gauges on suppression system storage containers and recharges or replaces containers.
Pay Rate: $43.38 / per hour
Responsibilities
Essential Job Duties:
  • Performs the Fire Alarm duties necessary to maintain buildings and structures in good repair.
  • Works with other Mechanics to share specialized skills and experience related to fire systems maintenance and repair. Incumbent may be required to assist the Sprinkler Team on occasions.
  • Performs installations, inspections, periodic tests, maintenance, and repairs installed fire alarm detection and suppression systems in accordance with manufacturer specifications and NFPA.
  • Inspects fire alarm equipment visually and replaces defective components.
  • Tests initiating and signal circuits, detectors, and system transmitter and makes needed repairs.
  • Must have good writing skills; incumbent will be required to complete the NFPA Forms for Fire Alarm Testing and Inspections.
  • Testing and inspecting of the Fire Extinguishers.
  • Work with various subcontractors. Incumbent shall coordinate and work with the subcontractors as required. Individual must be able to interpret wiring diagrams in order to locate failures.
  • Work involves planning and layout of work from blueprints, drawings, models, and verbal and written instructions.
  • Uses a variety of hand tools, portable power tools, and standard measuring instruments.
  • Plans, organizes work, and meets all deadlines. Able to do a variety of tasks in any single day.
  • Coordinates with trade and warehouse personnel to identify the proper and correct materials, parts assemblies, and requirements for a variety of requisitions necessary for the job/task.
  • Submits and supports outage request as required including working an alternate schedule.
  • Responds to emergency site maintenance as required.
  • Inspects and diagnoses problems to determine corrective repairs.
  • Performs on call and preventive maintenance duties as necessary.
  • Performs periodic inventories and prepares material requisitions for replacement items as required.
  • Operates customer and company motor vehicles and/or other equipment in a safe manner.
  • Performs various lower classified duties such as (but not limited to) file maintenance, workspace cleanup, maintain warehouse space and telephone answering as required.
  • Supports other department staff and trade groups in daily operations as needed or directed.
  • Adheres to the established safety and personnel policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements
Mandatory:
  • At least two (2) years of experience actively working on fire alarm and suppression systems. Demonstrate competency in these areas.
  • Possess or obtain a NICET I in Fire Alarm Systems within twelve months of hire date.
  • Possess or obtain a NICET II in Fire Alarm Systems within 18 months of hire date.
  • Demonstrated ability to install, troubleshoot and repair various fire alarm systems, controls and equipment including addressable fire alarm and suppression systems with minimal supervision.
  • Extensive knowledge of applicable codes and standards, i.e. NFPA, UFC.
  • Working knowledge of solid-state and conventional control circuitry.
  • Familiarity with basic mathematical functions as required.
  • Extensive knowledge of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of people in a professional, courteous manner in diversified situations.
  • Mature judgment and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • S. Citizenship.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain the required intelligence community level clearance.
  • Ability to pass pre-hire background and drug screen.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Preferred:
  • Experience working with VESDA and FM200 systems
  • NICET III or higher Certification

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and team lift 75 pounds.
