How to get a job on a container ship?

Entry-level positions like deckhands or engine room assistants often require basic training, while more advanced roles may require experience and specialized skills; applying through shipping companies or maritime recruitment agencies is common.

Effective teamwork, adaptability, and clear communication are valuable soft skills in this fast-paced environment. These skills are critical for safe, efficient cargo movement and smooth coordination in large-scale port operations.

How much do you get paid working on a container ship?

You'll often work as part of a coordinated team, including crane operators, dockworkers, logistics staff, and supervisors, all focused on efficiently moving and tracking cargo. Shifts can vary, sometimes including nights, weekends, or holidays, depending on port activity. Safety procedures are highly emphasized due to the use of heavy machinery and the movement of large containers, and proper personal protective equipment (PPE) is required at all times. Many container port roles also offer opportunities for advancement into supervisory or specialized technical positions as you gain experience and additional certifications.
