What is a container owner operator?

A Container Owner Operator is an independent truck driver who owns and operates their own truck to transport shipping containers. They typically work with ports, rail yards, and shipping companies to move containers between locations. Unlike company drivers, owner-operators handle their own business expenses, such as fuel, maintenance, and insurance. This role offers greater earning potential and flexibility but also requires strong business management skills. Many Container Owner Operators lease onto larger carriers or work independently to find freight loads.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a container owner operator?

Successful Container Owner Operators require a valid commercial driver's license (CDL), experience with freight logistics, and the ability to handle and maintain tractor-trailer equipment reliably. Familiarity with electronic logging devices (ELDs), dispatch software, and safety inspection tools is essential for compliance and efficient operations. Strong time management, problem-solving, and customer service skills help operators build trust and effectively navigate challenges on the road. These skills ensure timely, safe cargo deliveries and successful management of both business and customer relationships.

What are some common challenges faced by container owner operators, and how can they be managed?

Container Owner Operators often face challenges such as tight delivery schedules, variable fuel costs, port delays, and the responsibility of maintaining their own vehicles. Staying organized with scheduling tools, maintaining open communication with dispatchers, and investing in regular preventative maintenance can help manage these issues. Additionally, understanding port procedures and establishing relationships with terminal operators can streamline pickups and drop-offs. Adaptability and proactive planning are key for navigating these challenges and ensuring consistent, profitable operations.

Job description

Bring spaces to life with your passion for plants as an Interior Plant Care Technician on Dennis' 7 Dees Urban Plantscapes team! Urban Plantscapes is our commercial interior plant division, dedicated to creating and maintaining thriving plant environments in workplaces, hospitality spaces, and beyond. Your primary focus will be a dedicated interior plant route across the Portland Metro region, where you'll become the trusted expert clients rely on to keep their spaces looking vibrant year-round. The role shifts with the seasons: spring through fall, you'll also maintain outdoor container gardens and planters at retail and commercial properties; from mid-November through late December, the focus turns to holiday display installations. Throughout, you'll combine hands-on plant care with creative problem-solving — assessing plant health and making recommendations to clients. If you love plants, enjoy working independently, and take pride in the spaces you care for, this role is for you.
To apply, please upload a resume AND cover letter (as one document) describing your relevant experience why you are a good fit for this role.

Responsibilities
  • Drive company vehicle to client locations following structured routes, including regular routes in downtown Portland requiring navigation, parking, and comfort operating in a dense urban environment
  • Water, fertilize, and maintain plants to ensure optimal health and appearance
  • Clean, trim, and orient interior and outdoor plants and containers for proper light exposure and aesthetic appeal
  • Maintain outdoor container gardens and planters at retail and commercial properties
  • Keep plants free from disease and insects using appropriate treatments
  • Determine replacement needs and install new plants upon approval
  • Keep company vehicles, tools, and equipment clean and organized
  • Maintain accurate records of plant care activities and installation work
  • Provide exceptional customer service, communicate recommendations, and report account concerns to clients
Qualifications
  • Valid driver's license with satisfactory driving record
  • Comfortable driving, parking, and working in downtown Portland traffic and parking conditions
  • 1-2 years of experience in horticultural service or related field
  • Knowledge of horticultural care practices and plant varieties
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Basic pest identification and treatment capabilities
  • Flexibility with work schedules and requirements
  • Physical ability to regularly lift/carry up to 75 pounds
  • Comfortable working on ladders with dexterous use of both hands for installation work
  • Pre-employment drug screening required
Work Schedule and Environment
  • Regular schedule (Jan-Oct): Mon-Thurs, approximately 10 hours per day dependent on route variation
  • Holiday schedule (Nov-Dec, dates fluctuate): Mon-Fri, primarily install work with some weekend hours required as needed
  • Extensive local travel throughout the Portland Metro region
  • Indoor and outdoor settings at various client locations
  • Physical demands include ladder work, heavy lifting, and working in diverse environmental condition
  • This position is based out of our headquarters in SE Portland.
Benefits & Pay Range
  • $22-25 per hour, dependent upon experience
  • Weekly paychecks
  • Paid time off
  • Comprehensive and affordable health insurance: medical, dental, vision, mental health, and alternative medicine
  • 401k with generous company match
  • 40% employee discount on all plants and retail merchandise
  • Partner discounts and employee store passes at companies like Danner, Carhartt, Adidas, and Columbia.
  • Tuition reimbursement for ongoing education
  • Opportunities for professional growth and advancement within the company
