Contact Lens Assistant information

What does a contact lens assistant do?

A Contact Lens Assistant helps customers select, fit, and care for contact lenses under the supervision of an optometrist or optician. Their duties include teaching patients how to insert and remove lenses, providing cleaning and care instructions, handling administrative tasks, and sometimes assisting with eye exams. They play a key role in ensuring customers have a safe and comfortable experience with their contact lenses.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a contact lens assistant?

To thrive as a Contact Lens Assistant, you need a good understanding of ocular health, basic optometry procedures, and customer service skills, often supported by a high school diploma and on-the-job training. Familiarity with optical instruments, contact lens fitting software, and inventory management systems is typically required. Attention to detail, patience, and effective communication help build trust with clients and ensure accurate lens dispensing. These skills are crucial for maintaining patient eye health, providing excellent service, and supporting the smooth operation of an optometry practice.
